U.S. rookies slip into Ryder Cup shadow on last day

MEDINAH, Illinois (Reuters) - Three of the four American rookies who seized the Ryder Cup spotlight with their fearless play slipped into the shadows during the decisive singles on Sunday, as Europe claimed a shock victory.

Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker and Keegan Bradley became instant Ryder Cup darlings with their dazzling debut in the opening foursomes and fourballs on Friday but were mostly invisible on Sunday as Europe stormed back from a 10-6 deficit to take the trophy.

The first-timers, who had formed the backbone of the American's 5-3 first day lead and made significant contributions on day two, failed to deliver in the last day pressure cooker with Jason Dufner the only rookie to record a win beating Sweden's Peter Hanson two up.

"It's hard not to get up in front of these fans with so much at stake in the singles," Dufner told reporters. "I made a couple of nice putts there that kind of got me fired up a little bit.

"Excited to get that point for the team."

Bradley had led the American Ryder Cup team, forming an electrifying partnership with Phil Mickelson that generated three points from three matches but on their own both came up short on Sunday.

Bradley absorbed his first Ryder Cup loss falling 2&1 to world number one Rory McIlroy while Mickelson lost one down to Justin Rose in his 38th Ryder Cup match, the most by an American in the biennial competition.

Before the Europeans had popped the corks on their champagne, the post-mortem on the 14-1/2 to 13-1/2 loss had begun with Love being quizzed about his move to sit down the red-hot Bradley and Mickelson from Saturday's fourball that may have cost his team a valuable point.

"In hindsight, we would have done a lot of things differently, I guess," said Love. "These guys asked to do certain things during the week and there are some guys that didn't want to sit out; but guys that felt like they needed to rest, we let them rest.

"I'm going to second guess myself for a long time. Could have done a lot of things differently."

One thing Love will not regret is having four rookies on his squad, Bradley (3-1-0), Dufner (3-1-0), Simpson (2-2-0) and Snedeker (1-2-0) combining to contribute nine points to the U.S. cause.

In fact it was the senior members of the team who failed to hold up their end, Jim Furyk (1-2-0), Steve Stricker (0-4-0) and Tiger Woods (0-3-1) managing just one-and-a-half points between them.

"I tried to remind the guys a little bit yesterday, even after the third session, that the tournament was not even halfway over yet point wise," said Love. "We had a long way to go.

"We tried to not focus on results but we talked about it a little bit last night; that all we could do was just go out, play one match at a time, everybody go out and have fun, try to win their point.

"I'm sure there's a lot of great plans in a lot of sporting events that sound really good the night before, before the game starts, and then there's a fumble or a turnover or something happens and it doesn't work.

"What didn't work today is they played a little bit better than us and got some momentum and made it tough."

Police ID man who killed self on TV after chase

PHOENIX (AP) ? A man who stole a car at gunpoint, shot at Phoenix police officers and then led them on a chase that ended with his suicide broadcast on national television was identified Saturday as a wanted felon with a long criminal history.

Jodon F. Romero, 33, was wanted for violating his parole for a weapons conviction and had numerous other violent crimes in his background, police spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson said.

At the end of an hour-long pursuit on an interstate west of Phoenix Friday, Romero pulled into the desert and an officer shot at him, although it appears he missed, Thompson said. Romero then walked off the dirt road, put a gun to his head and killed himself.

Fox News was covering the chase that began about midday Friday using a live helicopter shot from Phoenix affiliate KSAZ-TV. Anchor Shepard Smith told viewers that the video was supposed to be on a delay so it could be cut off if something went awry.

"We really messed up, and we're all very sorry," Smith said minutes after the suicide aired. Fox apologized for showing the violence on air. KSAZ itself was not airing the chase.

On Saturday, Thompson said police did everything in their power to de-escalate the situation, but Romero seemed intent on continuing a crime spree that began with a minor incident where he apparently hit a passing car with his hand, leading to a call to police.

As officers were heading to the south Phoenix area, they learned that a Dodge Caliber sedan had just been stolen at gunpoint from a nearby restaurant parking lot.

They spotted the car and gave chase, but pulled back when Romero running red lights and endangering the public, Thompson said. Instead, unmarked cars and a police helicopter began following him at a distance.

Romero drove into an industrial area and spotted two marked police units, with one officer standing beside one car talking with another officer. He veered into their lane and opened fire, missing the officers but hitting one patrol car.

He then got onto Interstate 10, heading west toward California at speeds in excess of 100 mph.

The police helicopter and unmarked police vehicles followed at a distance, and the Fox helicopter began its coverage.

Romero fired at the police helicopter during the chase, but didn't hit it, Thompson said.

About 75 miles west of Phoenix he got off the interstate and drove off into the surrounding desert.

He eventually stopped, got out of the car and began walking down a dirt road. That's when an officer fired one shot at him.

Although Thompson said it appear the shot missed, television footage shows Romero stumbling and falling down and appearing to feel his torso before waking into some brush.

That's when he shot himself in the head.

An autopsy will determine if he was actually shot by an officer as well.

Thompson said it was clear to officers they had to stop Romero from getting back to a populated area.

"Anybody who will shoot at police officers, that shows a total disregard for them, will shoot at anybody else," he said. "And this needed to be put to an end. Even after we backed out all the marked units he still continued to go."

Arizona Department of Corrections records show Romero was imprisoned from April 2010 to June 2012 for a felony weapons charge.

Smart ball lets you play video games intuitively

Douglas Heaven, reporter

It looks more like a magic ball than a video-game controller. But this strange new gaming interface could prove almost as empowering for anyone who finds typical controllers frustratingly unintuitive.

The wireless device, called Palla, can be held in the hand or rolled along a surface and tracks the user's movements exactly, providing a one-to-one relationship between the physical device and its virtual on-screen counterpart.

Palla's plastic shell contains an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a magnetometer that work together to sense yaw, pitch and roll movements using an algorithm originally developed for UAVs. An internal barometer also senses Palla's variations in altitude to within around 10 centimetres.

Fabio Varesano and Fabiana Vernero at the University of Turin, Italy, designed the device to be as intuitive as possible: unlike even the motion-sensitive controllers for the Nintendo Wii or Sony PS3, Palla has no buttons. Instead, pressure and proximity sensors allow a user to interact with the ball by tapping or moving their hand over its surface. It also provides feedback via pulsing LEDs and vibration. The researchers presented the device at the International Conference on Fun and Games earlier this month.

Its versatility means that it can be adapted for use as a generic computer input device, replacing a mouse, or as a remote control. But the pair have primarily developed Palla as an easy-to-use video-game controller that they hope will be easy to use by both very young children and the elderly.

For example, suppose you are playing a football video game, he says, and you need to take a penalty kick. "You are not given a controller, but simply stand in front of a projector or TV. Then, I would place in front of you a Palla device, properly camouflaged to look like a soccer ball, and then I'd ask you to take the kick." In this type of scenario, the device would be even more intuitive than hands-free input, such as Microsoft's Kinect, claims Veresano.

"I'm pretty sure you would immediately know what to do," he says. "That's because you already have the necessary skills to 'operate' a soccer ball. You'd just kick it as hard as possible and you wouldn't need any training."

(AP) ? Probation officials openly worried about actor Johnny Lewis' mental health and his danger to others in recent months, and this week their worst fears came true.

The man who died a violent death on "Sons of Anarchy" three years ago apparently beat and strangled his landlady and attacked neighbors before falling or leaping to his own death in neighborhood near Hollywood on Wednesday afternoon.

They were the final violent acts of a man who in the previous 10 months had been repeatedly arrested, sent to counseling and had left jail only five days before his demise.

Court records and his attorney detailed attempts to help Lewis but not in time to help 81-year-old Catherine Davis, who neighbors reported screaming inside a home near the outskirts of Los Angeles' Griffith Park. The home had been ransacked, glass was shattered and a dead cat was also found inside, and Lewis' body was found in the driveway.

Lewis' cause of death is pending toxicology results, Coroner's investigative division Lt. Fred Corral said Thursday evening. Davis died from blunt head trauma and manual strangulation, he said.

The deaths came four months after a probation officer expressed grave concerns about Lewis' mental health, writing that he was "very concerned for the well-being of not only the community but that of the defendant."

Court records detail Lewis' descent from January 2012, when he attacked two men and hit them in the head with a bottle, through August, when he acted as his own attorney and pleaded no contest to felony assault.

By that point he had been arrested three times for incidents ranging from trying to break into an occupied home in Santa Monica, Calif., to resisting arrest. He had been sent to treatment programs that specialized in drug and alcohol addiction as well as mental illness.

A May 17 probation report states that "the defendant suffers from some form of chemical dependency, mental health issue and a lack of permanent housing. Given this, (Lewis) will continue to be a threat to any community he may reside."

Another probation officer had written two months earlier, "Obviously defendant's behavior is out of control and needs counseling afforded by a professional."

Lewis remained on supervised probation at the time of his death.

Lewis' attorney Jonathan Mandel said the actor had serious mental issues that seemed to surface fairly recently. He said Lewis' parents and others had tried desperately to help him.

"Johnny Lewis had a lot of problems, a lot of mental problems," Mandel said by phone Thursday. "I recommended treatment for him but he declined it."

He continued, saying: "I give a lot of credit to his parents. They were really strong in trying to help him out. They really went to bat for him, but I guess they just couldn't do enough."

Lewis' career spanned more than a decade, mainly in small roles. He played Ricky in the 2007 movie "AVPR: Aliens vs Predator ? Requiem" and was Dennis "Chili" Childress for two seasons on TV's "The O.C." He also appeared in episodes of such popular television shows as "Boston Public," ''Judging Amy," ''Malcolm in the Middle" and "Drake & Josh."

He was on "Sons of Anarchy" in 2008 and 2009 before his character was killed off.

Kurt Sutter, the show's creator and executive producer, tweeted news of Lewis' death Thursday:

"It was a tragic end for an extremely talented guy, who unfortunately had lost his way," Sutter wrote. "I wish I could say that I was shocked by the events last night, but I was not. I am deeply sorry that an innocent life had to be thrown into his destructive path."

Exterior Improvements to the house - Zillow Real Estate Advice

I'm very active in Hoboken and Jersey City, including the Heights.? $5k - $6k for a brick facade may well be worth the investment as long as your overall plan for the home makes sense.?

For instance if you purchased the home at a very reasonable amount or below market as a short sale or foreclosure your ultimate resale value may be higher then your total investment into the home.

One should have a good estimate of their total costs and have a good understanding of the after improvement resale value in the current market place.? This way you can make smart decisions based on your goals.

Buying is an emotional experience.? What a buyer feels when they first see a home (good or bad) is critical on whether or not they will buy that home.? As most here have stated, curb appeal is generally where this starts so an investment here can make sound sense!

Markets slide as focus remains on Spain

LONDON (AP) ? Market fell on Friday as investors continued to fret over Spain's finances in the run-up to a report on the state of the country's banks.

Trading was volatile, possibly due to the fact that Friday is the last day of the financial quarter, the deadline for certain trades and contracts to be settled. This sometimes involves buying and selling large amounts of stocks at the last minute in order to make a profit on a deal.

Investors were cautious over Spain, a day after the country's government announced big spending cuts it hopes will convince potential bailout creditors and investors it has a rock-solid plan to heal its public finances.

Traders are waiting for the publication later in the day of the results of stress test results into 14 of the country's banks. The tests are expected to identify a capital shortfall of around ?60 billion ($77 billion).

Rating agency Moody's is also expected to issue an evaluation of Spain's creditworthiness. There are concerns the agency will downgrade Spain's government debt to junk status.

Craig Erlam, markets analyst at Alpari, said a downgrade to junk status could "create some panic" among holders of Spanish debt.

"The positive side to this is this could accelerate the bailout request," Erlam said. The other 16 countries that use the euro and the European Central Bank are prepared to help Spain financially, should it need it, but Madrid has so far put off a request.

Madrid's IBEX index was one of the worst performers in Europe as investors awaited developments. The IBEX fell 1.7 percent to close at 7,708.50.

Elsewhere, Germany's DAX ended 1 percent lower at 7,216.15 while the CAC-40 in France fell 2.5 percent to 3,354.82. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares dropped 0.7 percent to 5,742.07.

In the U.S., the Dow Jones industrial average was 0.7 percent lower at 13,398.19 while the broader S&P 500 index fell 0.7 percent to 1,437.63.

In other financial markets, the euro was down 0.4 percent at $1.2849 and a barrel of oil was down 15 cents at $91.70.

Earlier in Asia, stocks had been buoyed by speculation that China's central bank will act soon to help the world's No. 2 economy.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 0.4 percent to 20,840.38. South Korea's Kospi added nearly 0.4 percent to 1,996.21. But Japan's Nikkei 225 index lost 0.9 percent to 8,870.16, sinking on a government report that showed industrial production fell a further 1.3 percent in August.

Mainland Chinese shares rose ahead of an extended holiday next week. The Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.5 percent to 2,086.17 and the Shenzhen Composite Index rose 1.9 percent to 853.83.

British Airways tests eliminating online check-in

It?s a familiar process to most air travelers by now: Watch the clock before your trip and log on to a computer within 24 hours of your flight to check in online. But even that simple routine, which has been a huge improvement over the previous tradition of standing in a long queue at the airport, might go away in the future ? something industry watchers say isn?t necessarily a plus.

New strategy for battling HIV

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? New research showing how the HIV virus targets "veterans" or memory T-cells could change how drugs are used to stop the virus, Mason researchers say.

The research will appear in the Journal of Biological Chemistry's October edition and currently is available online.

"It's a big breakthrough for us," says Yuntao Wu, an author of the study and professor at the Mason-based National Center for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases. "I think this will impact the field."

Helper T-cells support the body's immune system by organizing forces to fight off infection. The HIV virus hijacks helper T-cells. When helper T-cell numbers plummet, the body is vulnerable to disease.

Not all helper T-cells are the same; some are experienced ones called memory helper T-cells, and others, naive cells or "virgin" cells, haven't encountered an infection. Mason researchers studied why HIV preferentially goes after memory helper T-cells, while shunning their close colleagues. Memory and naive T-cells appear similar.

"In the body, HIV is able to kill most memory helper cells," says Weifeng Wang, PhD Biosciences '12, the study's main author. "We wanted to pursue what makes the difference between memory and naive T-cells on a molecular level."

Unlike naive helper T-cells, memory T-cells are on the go, and much more mobile. And it's that momentum that attracts the HIV virus and makes the memory cell vulnerable, says Wang, who's currently a research fellow in the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at Harvard Medical School.

When a memory cell moves, inside the cell, it looks like a waterfall on the moving edge. "It's called 'treadmilling'," Wu says. "The cytoskeleton or the cell's supporting bone is acting like a muscle. The treadmilling of cytoskeleton pushes the cell to migrate. That's how it pushes itself. In the past year we've been studying how HIV infects those memory cells. It has to go to the center, into the nucleus. It has to go past the cytoskeleton barriers to go into the center. For many years we didn't understand how the virus could cross such a structure. It's like a wall. It has to cross that wall."

HIV jumps over the wall by exploiting the cell's treadmilling process, Wu says. "The HIV virus uses a receptor to attach to the cell for entry," he says. "When the virus touches that receptor it's like someone ringing the doorbell. That triggers a signal -- someone comes out and opens the door. Now the HIV virus can start the treadmill to 'walk' along the cytoskeleton towards the center. If the virus goes to naive cells, it cannot do it. Naive cells aren't sensitive enough. The cytoskeleton of these 'virgin' cells is different from the memory cells, and it is not easy for the virus to start the treadmilling process."

HIV's ability to mutate makes it difficult for our body to control it. "It can mutate very fast," Wu says. "You may have a lot of memory cell soldiers there but they are not able to recognize the HIV virus. They remember one guy, but this guy changes his face so they don't remember him. That's why our immune system is not effective against HIV. On top of that, the virus kills lots of your memory helper cells. Without sufficient help, your immune system is in complete dysfunction, and now you don't have an immune system."

HIV's knack for mutating makes it a tough target for drugs, Wang says. By shifting the focus to the cell, away from the virus itself, researchers may find a new way to tackle the virus, he says.

"Basically, our new strategy will be finding a cellular target, something HIV needs to depend on," Wu says. "It's as if the virus says 'give me a house.' The cell is the house. The house has to have electricity and everything so it can live there. Our approach is to look for something the virus needs to live in that house and then to reduce it or shut it down. The challenge will be if you shut that down, that it doesn't impact normal cell functions. It's a very tricky balance. You want to kill the virus but not healthy cells along with it."

Wu is looking at existing drugs, including those used for cancer. "There is something shared between cancer cells and HIV- infected cells because cancer cells also like to migrate. So some drugs that are used to slow down cancer migration could also be used to treat HIV."

As part of his doctoral thesis, Wang spent six years pursuing why HIV attacks memory cells. Failure is a part of research, he says. He had to change the experiment conditions multiple times before finding success. "It's like when you get lost in the woods at night; it's difficult to find the way out."

Mentors and colleagues spurred Wang on. Sheer persistence and hours in the lab eventually won out. "It's very challenging to do scientific discovery," Wang says. "There is no precedent."

NYC DC AIDS Research Ride partially funded the research for three years, Wu says. Also, a $1.2 million grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health, is slated for the project from June 2009 until May 2013.

Overview of the Indian Tax System | Finance Buzz - Personal ...

The Indian tax system can be very complex, but for a clearer understanding, we can break it down into simple elements that make up one?s personal income:

a) Salary from an Employer.

b) Rental (house property) income

c) Capital gains (gain or losses made by the buying and selling of Shares and other capital assets)

d) Business income ? income earned as a professional or as a partner in a firm.

e) Other sources of income such as interest and dividends.

Put all these incomes together and you get your Gross Total Income. It is called ?gross? total income because you can reduce this income by various schemes available. These are called Tax Deductions. You can reduce your tax liability by investing in either of the following tax deductions:

a)? Invest money into a Provident Fund account

b) Investing a term deposit (FD) for 5 years

c) Paying premium of life insurance policy for yourself, your spouse and your children.

d) Repaying the principal component of a home loan.
e) Paying the Tuition Fees for the education of your children.

The above tax deductions can help you reduce your taxable income by upto Rs 100000 under Section 80c of the Indian Income Tax Act.

There are other tax deductions which are applied when you pay premiums of a mediclaim policy or when you give donations to recognized charitable organizations or when you pay the interest of an education loan, amongst several others that help you further reduce your taxable income.

After the tax deductions have been applied we arrive at your Total Income. We can then calculate your tax liability as per the following tax slabs:

There are basic exemptions limits on which you pay no tax. Any income over these limits is then taxed at different rates listed below:

For the assessment year 2012-2013, the basic exemption limits are:
Rs. 180000 for men, Rs. 190000 for women and Rs. 250000 for senior citizens

All Income Over the basic exemption limit but below Rs. 500000 will be taxed at 10%.

Income over Rs. 500000 but below Rs. 800000 will be taxed at 20%.
and lastly,
Income over Rs. 800000 and above is charged at 30%.

Once your tax liability is determined, all your tax credits such as TDS, advance taxes and self assessment taxes are deducted from your liability to get to a final grand total of the possible taxes that you may pay or get refunded.

Working Example:

A Male, aged 45 with a Salary Income of Rs. 250000 and Interest Income of Rs. 50000, a Rs. 5000 Investment in Employee Provident Fund and a total TDS of Rs. 5000 in the assessment year 2012-2013 will be taxed as follows:

Gross Total Income: Rs. 250000 + Rs. 50000 = Rs. 300000
Tax Deduction: Rs. 5000 (Investment in EPF)
Total Income: Rs. 295000
Basic Tax Exemption: Rs. 180000
So you have to now pay Tax on Rs. 115000 @ 10% = Rs. 11500
But you have already paid TDS of Rs. 5000, which is deducted from Rs. 11500 to arrive at a final tax figure of Rs. 6500 + Surcharge + Education Cess which is payable as your final tax liability.

In Massachusetts Brown, Warren release competing heritage ads

The Senate race in Massachusetts has returned to an old theme, the question of challenger Elizabeth Warren's claim to Native American ancestry. Warren and Senator Scott Brown both released competing ads on the issue.

By Steve LeBlanc,?Associated Press / September 24, 2012

Democratic US Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren speaks at a campaign event in Somerville, Mass. Monday. Warren is running for the Senate seat occupied by incumbent Republican US Sen. Scott Brown, who is once again questioning her claim of Native American heritage.

Republican US Sen. Scott Brown on Monday launched a new television ad highlighting Democratic challenger?Elizabeth?Warren's?claims of Native American heritage as Democrats faulted him for not doing more to reveal the occupations of his top donors.

Brown's 30-second ad features clips of news reports on?Warren's?Native American claims, for which she has been unable to provide any proof. Brown's ad brought a prompt response from?Warren, who in her own 30-second ad, released late Monday, said she was told as a child that her mother was part Cherokee and part Delaware Indian and that her parents had to elope because her father's family wasn't happy with her mother's heritage.

Warren, a Harvard Law School professor, had listed herself in law school directories as having Native American heritage, although she said she gained no advantage. She's also acknowledged telling officials at Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania that she had Native American heritage but said she offered that information only after she had been hired.

"I didn't check a box to go to college. I didn't check a box to go to law school. The only box I checked was in a directory,"?Warren?said during an interview earlier Monday on WTKK-FM. "I didn't do this to get a job."

Records show?Warren?declined to apply for admission to Rutgers Law School under a minority student program and identified her race as "white" on an employment record at the University of Texas, where she worked from 1983 to 1987.

Brown, who won a 2010 special election to succeed the late Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy, has called onWarren?to release her personnel records.?Warren?again declined on Monday, saying her background had no impact on her hiring.

Charles Fried, a member of the committee that reviewed?Warren?for the Harvard post, has said the question of her ancestry was never mentioned.

Democrats, in turn, faulted Brown on Monday for failing to identify the employers or occupations of a higher percentage of big money donors than?Warren.

According to Federal Election Commission reports, more than 16 percent of donors to Brown's campaign did not identify where they worked or what they did for a living. The donors accounted for $2.1 million of the $13.1 million Brown collected in donations over $200.

DNA case backlog at FBI down 87 percent in 2 years

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The FBI laboratory has reduced its backlog of forensic DNA cases by 87 percent in two years, from 3,211 cases to 403 cases.

The Justice Department's inspector general attributes most of the decline to increased staffing and using automated technology. Also, the FBI is focusing on cases where DNA testing of biological evidence is more likely to yield useful information.

The lab conducts DNA tests on biological evidence taken from crime scenes and items like envelopes, clothing and drinking glasses.

Most reductions took place in the nuclear DNA Unit, which examines fluids, blood and semen. Also reducing its caseload was the mitochondrial DNA unit, which analyzes hair fragments, bones and teeth. The inspector general reported Tuesday that the backlog was reduced from March 2010 to March of this year.

The Many Choices Of Home Business Internet Marketing Online ...

Quality Web Hosting

The Many Choices Of Home Business Internet Marketing Online

If you plan to have a home business, you need to decide how to market it. Internet marketing typically involves using the internet to advertise a company?s products or services. It has become more popular lately because business owners have found that anyone can use it, including small business owners.

There are many different components of home business internet marketing. You should become somewhat familiar with the keywords if you plan to get paid to market online at home, or even if you plan to market your own home business.

The main aspects of home business internet marketing online are article marketing, pay per click advertising, banner ads, blog marketing, e-mail marketing, and affiliate marketing. Article marketing, blog marketing and e-mail marketing all involve writing, so if that is your strength, you can concentrate on those.

E-mail Marketing

For example, e-mail marketing simply consists of sending out mass e-mails, hoping that many people will reply. In order to get and keep their attention, your writing should be colorful and persuasive. This way, they may give your website a chance and actually check it out, perhaps buying a product. If that even happens occasionally, then e-mail marketing efforts will be worth it.

Article Marketing

Article marketing, obviously another way to use your writing strength, entails writing articles about different aspects relating to your business and sending them to online magazines. They will usually include facts about you and your business at the end, which may lead people to click on your website.

Other Advertising Techniques

On the other hand, banner ads, affiliate marketing and pay per click marketing involve mainly creativity, as your goal is to entice consumers to click the ads to go to the website. Thus, if you are artistic or have a lot of great marketing ideas in general, you should do well in those aspects of marketing.

One benefit of internet marketing is that all the information you need is available online. Whether you need a fresh, creative idea, website content, or advice from seasoned internet marketers, you do not even need to leave your house to find the information. This is why it is both a great work from home job and an easy way to market for any home business that you have.

It is easy to become overwhelmed with all the choices in home business internet marketing online. However, once you perform some planning and research to find the right online marketing opportunity for you, it is sure to go smoothly.

Naked mole-rats may hold clues to pain relief

Monday, September 24, 2012

Naked mole-rats evolved to thrive in an acidic environment that other mammals, including humans, would find intolerable. Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago report new findings as to how these rodents have adapted to this environment.

The study was published online this week on PLOS ONE.

In the tightly crowded burrows of the African naked mole-rats' world, carbon dioxide builds up to levels that would be toxic for other mammals, and the air becomes highly acidic. These animals freely tolerate these unpleasant conditions, says Thomas Park, professor of biological sciences at UIC and principal investigator of the study -- which may offer clues to relieving pain in other animals and humans.

Much of the lingering pain of an injury, for example, is caused by acidification of the injured tissue, Park said.

"Acidification is an unavoidable side-effect of injury," he said. "Studying an animal that feels no pain from an acidified environment should lead to new ways of alleviating pain in humans."

In the nose of a mammal, specialized nerve fibers are activated by acidic fumes, stimulating the trigeminal nucleus, a collection of nerves in the brainstem, which in turn elicits physiological and behavioral responses that protect the animal -- it will secrete mucus and rub its nose, for example, and withdraw or avoid the acidic fumes.

The researchers placed naked mole-rats in a system of cages in which some areas contained air with acidic fumes. The animals were allowed to roam freely, and the time they spent in each area was tracked. Their behavior was compared to laboratory rats, mice, and a closely related mole-rat species that likes to live in comfy conditions, as experimental controls.

The naked mole-rats spent as much time exposing themselves to acidic fumes as they spent in fume-free areas, Park said. Each control species avoided the fumes.

The researchers were able to quantify the physiologic response to exposure to acidic fumes by measuring a protein, c-Fos, an indirect marker of nerve activity that is often expressed when nerve cells fire. In naked mole-rats, no such activity was found in the trigeminal nucleus when stimulated. In rats and mice, however, the trigeminal nucleus was highly activated.

The naked mole-rats' tolerance of acidic fumes is consistent with their adaptation to living underground in chronically acidic conditions, Park said.

Suicide bomber kills two, wounds 46, at Nigerian church

BAUCHI, Nigeria | Sun Sep 23, 2012 11:03am EDT

BAUCHI, Nigeria (Reuters) - A suicide car bomber blew himself up outside a Catholic church in northern Nigeria on Sunday, killing himself and at least two other people and wounding 46, police said.

Police cordoned off the area around St. John's church after the blast, which caused minimal damage to the building but killed at least two people in a market area of Bauchi city.

A Reuters journalist saw emergency services bring out three bodies in the area, called Wunti, and police identified one as the occupant of the car that blew up.

Several wounded were being taken out on stretchers.

"I was just coming out on my way to church and I saw a car speeding towards the church entrance. It hit the fence and there was a huge 'bang' and pieces of metal flew into the air," Manan Yara, a housewife who lives opposite the church, told Reuters.

"I thank God I'm still alive," she said, her hands shaking.

Bauchi police spokesman Hassan Mohammed said the bomber, plus a woman and a child were killed, and 46 other people got various injuries, including two policemen protecting the church.

He added that it would have been a worse had the bomber managed to enter the building.

"When the suicide bomber targeted the church he was prevented by the measures put in place and instead he detonated his explosives in the parking lot," he said.

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) spokesman Yushua Shuaib also confirmed the death toll, and said that of the injured some 22 were receiving treatment in hospital.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Islamist sect Boko Haram has claimed several attacks on churches and other Christian gatherings this year, part of wider efforts to destabilize President Goodluck Jonathan's government.

DEADLY SECT

Boko Haram has killed hundreds of people since 2009 in attacks on security forces, government offices and churches, and three of its senior members have been designated as 'terrorists' by the United States.

The sect, which says it wants to revive an ancient Islamic caliphate in northern Nigeria that would practice strict Sharia law, has become the number one security threat to Africa's top oil producer, replacing militancy in the oil-rich southeast.

A military crackdown appears to have weakened Boko Haram, whose militants have not reproduced the kind of large-scale, coordinated attacks they carried out earlier this year. At least 186 people died in attacks across the city of Kano in January.

But almost daily shootings and bombings blamed on the Islamists have continued.

The militants have made no public pronouncements since security forces said they killed their spokesman Abu Qaqa in a gun battle in Kano last Sunday.

Security analysts say Boko Haram has forged links with other Jihadist movements expanding across West Africa, such as al-Qaeda in the Islamic Magreb, an Algerian-born outfit based in northern Mali.

But apart from an attack on the U.N. headquarters in the capital Abuja last August, Boko Haram's focus has been mainly on local targets.

State of the Movement: Canada's Blood & Honour Part 3

NOTE: As this article is pretty screen shot heavy, we decided that we would divide it into three parts. This article is Part 3.

Noble doesn't spend as much time online as in the past (though given the terms of his release, he should have been arrested when he first began posting online again). In fact, other than his reply on the thread discussing his attendance at the Pride Week events, it had been some time since he had logged in to write anything on the Blood & Honour International forums.

Our readers could imagine his surprise when he found that he had been banned. But at least he dealt with his banning with class and dignity:

Wait. We mean he threw a hissy fit.

Now, we've since learned that the above post has now been deleted or hidden and the link he provides no longer brings up anything of particular interest. If only someone had taken the appropriate scr.... oh just get to the screen shots and stop being so coy!!!

Nicely done. In this short excerpt we find Noble pretty much confirming everything we've written about on this blog over the years:
  • Members engaged in acts of random violence.
  • They attack each other as much as they do the people they overtly hate.
  • They talk about each other behind each other's backs and will "out" people who piss them off (not that we didn't know that "Endseig" was Jessie already).
  • They like the idea of children, but when it comes to being parents, well, not so much (and Bill, to comment on the parenting skills of someone else from the likes of you takes a hell of a lot of chutzpah).
This, ladies and gentlemen, represents the quality that we've come to know and love as the, "Master Race."

Yikes.

?Silent Killer?: Santa Rosa Beach woman takes her fight with ovarian cancer to the public

September 22, 2012 8:55 AM

In April 2008, Santa Rosa Beach resident Sara Markey began experiencing abdominal pain and bloating along with fatigue.

Markey began visiting doctors and was told it was her gallbladder or her colon, and when tests showed them to be normal, she was told she needed to just relax, as she was just getting older and aches and pains were normal signs of aging.

But, 56-year-old Markey knew her body, and she knew something was wrong. She became too sick to work and could barely stand. By the time she had the answers she sought six months later, Markey was diagnosed with Stage 4 ovarian cancer.

"At that point, I was in such bad shape that it didn't hit me until I was recovering that I had cancer," she said.

She heard the bad news at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston Oct. 15 and was in surgery Oct. 16 for a hysterectomy and to remove her spleen.

Four years later, Markey is still battling the effects of the disease but considers herself a survivor.

"I will probably have to take chemo indefinitely," she says. "It's part of my life at this time. It's the new normal for me."

The chemo she is taking now is for tumor growth, which she gets at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. She moved back to Houston to be close to the hospital for her treatments, but still owns a home in South Walton and the SOHO lady's apparel stores at Gulf Place.

In addition to fighting to stay healthy, Markey also has another mission: promoting ovarian cancer awareness, and September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

"Typically, ovarian cancer doesn't show. It's called the silent killer because by the time a woman is diagnosed, she is usually in a late stage, as it was in my case. That's why it's so important that women are aware of the symptoms," she said. "The prognosis for Stage 4 ovarian cancer is getting better when it is caught early. It's hard to detect, but symptoms include bloating, abdominal pain, frequent urination, swelling, a feeling of fullness, gastro complaints, or changes in bowel habits. Women know when things aren't right in their bodies and I knew something wasn't right. I urge women to keep going to doctors until you find the right doctor.?

Markey goes for chemo every two weeks and is excited that Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast has a new cancer center.

"My message is: be aware of your symptoms and if any symptoms last more than two weeks, see your doctor. Don't give up!" she said.

Throughout the month of September, SOHO Beach and SOHO WOMAN, both in Gulf Place, will have complimentary information cards available, detailing the signs of ovarian cancer. Additionally, both stores will be offering bracelet and rings for sale promoting both ovarian and all cancer awareness. Proceeds from the sale of these items will go to ovarian cancer research.

"If any one of those four doctors or even I had known the symptoms of ovarian cancer, perhaps it would have been taken care of four years ago and I would be cancer free today," said Markey. "The survival rate of a Stage 4 ovarian cancer patient is five years. Let's promote ovarian cancer awareness so other women and their doctors can know the signs."

Noteshelf (for iPad)

If you're going to use an iPad for work or school, you need a note-taking app (or two) that meet your needs and that you enjoy using. If you find an app that offers all the bells and whistles you think you need, but you dread launching the darn thing, you won't use it. The iPad app Noteshelf ($5.99) gets more than halfway there on both accounts, but doesn't quite follow through and deliver everything an avid note taker might need, nor deliver it in a package that you'd necessarily want to look at day in and day out.

Signature Features
Noteshelf offers three signature features. First, it organizes notes into visual notebooks, which sit on a shelf that looks stunningly similar to Apple's iBooks app. If you like the idea of seeing your notes in a book, which you can title and design, this feature may help you keep track of your notes. It's really a more of a design trick than anything else, seeing as most note-taking apps give you some kind of mechanism for sorting or organizing notes?it's just that they're not always visual.

Second, Noteshelf supports not only handwriting and sketching, but also typed text, which not all note-taking apps do.

Third, this note-taking app has a well designed zoom tool, which serious note-takers know is a necessity for handwritten and sketched notes on the iPad. Touch-screen writing tends to get sloppy without it.

While these three signature features do create a decent foundation for Noteshelf, none of them are unique. For example, Penultimate uses the same visual notebook method of organization as Noteshelf, but costs one-sixth of the price. Penultimate, however, was specifically designed to handle handwriting and sketching and does not even include a keyboard in the app. Our favorite iPad note-taking app overall has been Note Taker HD? (4.5 stars and an Editors' Choice), and it allows for both typed text and sketching or handwritten text. It also has a zoom mode, and one that's just as good if not better than Noteshelf's. Note Taker HD comes with a few advantages over Noteshelf, too, which I'll explain in a moment.

Noteshelf's Shortcomings
With its signature features, Noteshelf seems like a capable enough note-taking application, but when I got down to actually using it, I found it to be missing a few critical components.

Like any well-rounded note-taking app, Noteshelf lets you import images, which you can paste into a note and mark up. Unfortunately, once you affix an image to a note, you can't select it to move it or crop it. The app doesn't have a pan tool at all (in the slideshow images, you may notice a hand icon, which is in fact a wrist protection feature and not the panning button it appears to be).

Without a pan tool or selection tool of some kind, it's next to impossible to move anything around the note page. Say you import an image, then mark it up with pen notes and highlighter marks. Now perhaps you'll add a text box to type a label for the image or additional notes about it. The note may start to get cluttered, and if you could only just shift some of the page elements a few inches this way or that, you could probably fit everything you want on the page. But in Noteshelf, you can't easily drag page elements to a new place.

I hinted earlier that Note Taker HD has a few advantages over Noteshelf, and the ability to more easily manipulate (crop, move) PDFs and images that you import is one. Another is support for left-handed people.

While I don't want to have unrealistic expectations for an iPad app, I did notice that Noteshelf flattens your notes immediately?meaning if you import an image, mark it up, and then go to erase one of your marks, you'll also be erasing the image that's beneath the marks. I really wouldn't expect to see layering enabled on a simple mobile note-taking app, and Noteshelf actually does get around this problem by supporting multiple undos. So you can erase or you can hit undo.

Penultimate, you'll remember, does not have any typed text support whatsoever, but one thing it has that Noteshelf doesn't is a "clear page" button. In Noteshelf, if you want o clear a note page entirely, you'll have to select the eraser button and rub the entire screen (or hit undo as many times as it takes).

Which App to Choose?
If your notes will include a mix of typed text and handwritten or sketched notes, I'd recommend Note Taker HD over Noteshelf. It costs a dollar less and has more. If you don't need to include typed notes, I would suggest going with the 99-cent app Penultimate.
