In N.J., help from National Guard and one another

HOBOKEN, N.J. ?? One of the most densely populated square miles in the U.S. is still full of floodwater and still out of power, and residents are starting to run out of patience with post-Sandy life.

?They?re saying we might not have power till Monday,? said Jessica Van Binsbergen, 28, a Hoboken, N.J., resident, who was waiting for a ferry to Manhattan. ?There?s a lot of flooding where I live. I?m headed to a friend?s.?

Van Binsbergen, her cat in tow, was standing in a line of hundreds of people ?? all of whom were eager to get out of Hoboken, a densely packed city of about 50,000 people along the Hudson River. Water up to four feet high remained pooled in some areas of the city, and flooded many of the basement apartments that line the streets; on Wednesday, National Guard vehicles arrived to assist with rescues and delivering meals to stranded people.

A Hoboken police officer estimated his department had performed ?a couple hundred? rescues since the storm hit.

?It?s been nonstop,? the officer, who said he wasn?t authorized by the city to speak on the record, told NBC News as he and another officer, both wearing high rain boots, waded over to an apartment surrounded by deep floodwaters to help a woman with a liver condition. ?We started doing rescues 28 hours ago and haven?t slept.?

Three of Hoboken?s four firehouses were flooded by Sandy, Battalion Chief Louis Moyeno said.

A man carries his wife through the floodwaters in Hoboken, N.J., on Wednesday.

?This is the only operational firehouse left,? he said, standing outside Hoboken Fire Department, Engine No. 2 on Washington Street. ?The water has receded, but there is no power to any of the other firehouses, and there?s water damage.?

Omar Vicioso, 31, said Sandy poured water into his basement, and left cars floating in his street. He was eager to get back to his work at a boutique store in Manhattan, he said, but wasn?t sure when that would happen.

?All the cars were scattered around,? he said. ?I don?t have a car -- I usually take public transportation -- but obviously that?s not happening. With my phone down, the PATH [train]down, the buses not working, it?s kind of a waiting game.?

A couple blocks away, William Mirlas, a contractor with a water removal company, was pumping water from a Hoboken resident?s home.

?He had four to five feet [in here],? Mirlas said. ?When I opened the door to his room, it was just like a movie: The water came in from outside, just like a river.?

In addition to the man?s furniture, his wallet and clothing were soaking wet, Mirlas said.

While the National Guard was assisting local crews with rescue efforts, residents tried to keep from going stir-crazy.

A dog named Shaggy is handed from a National Guard truck to National Guard personnel after the dog and his owner left a flooded building in Hoboken, N.J., on Wednesday.

Amid the darkness that encased nearly all of Hoboken, there was one bright spot: One neighborhood had power, and its inhabitants were happy to share.

?Re-charge your morning!? read signs posted around 11th Street. ?Free coffee and power outlets!?

?

In other parts of Hoboken,? loud sump pumps reverberated down streets where fake cobwebs and other Halloween trimmings decorated darkened, flooded storefronts and homes. But on and around 11th Street, residents seemed? to be having a block party rather than making a post-hurricane clamor for electricity.

Rey Erney, right, plugs his phone in on a neighbor's front steps along Eleventh street.

John and Jeanne-Marie Scura, who live on Garden Street near 11th, have four children ?? but by Wednesday morning, a group of about 15 kids had settled in comfortably into their home, happy to take advantage of their TV and computer.

Related story: Amid storm, a desperate search for power

?We never lost power,? John Scura said. ?People were asking us if they could charge their stuff because they saw our lights on. People brought food [in exchange].?

Their electricity luck didn?t extend to their local pharmacy, however, where the Scuras were trying to get antibiotics for one of their kids, who had strep throat.

Dale Shulmistra, his girlfriend, and their dog came to hang out and recharge their cell phones from a few blocks away. ?The generosity ?? ?the thoughtfulness of these people is fantastic. I?ve seen a couple of them before, talked to a couple before. It?s nice to hear other people?s stories [from Sandy].?

The power party attracted dozens of people throughout the day on both sides of the street, where power strips hung from extension cords out of first-floor windows.

?Do you guys need some coffee?? Theresa Howard, 47, who put up the fliers ?and organized the event yesterday, yelled to people as they walked down the street.

?Someone said this restores their faith in mankind. There?s just so much bad stuff going in , this is just such a simple thing, it was all we could do,? she told NBC News. ?People are really thankful ? Even a police officer said, ?This is what makes Hoboken so great. This is what it used to be.??

Meanwhile Wednesday, President Barack Obama toured New Jersey's battered coastline,?saying the federal government was "going to be here for the long haul"?for that state and 15 others dealing with destruction and power outages after Sandy, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie ordered that Halloween trick-or-treating be postponed in his state until Monday due to unsafe conditions.

Sandy killed at least 47 people in the U.S. after having killed at least?71 in the Caribbean.

Superstorm Sandy made landfall Monday evening on a destructive and deadly path across the Northeast.

Man with 'bionic' leg to climb Chicago skyscraper

CHICAGO (AP) ? Zac Vawter considers himself a test pilot. After losing his right leg in a motorcycle accident, the 31-year-old software engineer signed up to become a research subject, helping to test a trailblazing prosthetic leg that's controlled by his thoughts.

He will put this groundbreaking "bionic" leg to the ultimate test Sunday when he attempts to climb 103 flights of stairs to the top of Chicago's Willis Tower, one of the world's tallest skyscrapers.

If all goes well, he'll make history with the bionic leg's public debut. His whirring, robotic leg will respond to electrical impulses from muscles in his hamstring. Vawter will think, "Climb stairs," and the motors, belts and chains in his leg will synchronize the movements of its ankle and knee. Vawter hopes to make it to the top in an hour, longer than it would've taken before his amputation, less time than it would take with his normal prosthetic leg ? or, as he calls it, his "dumb" leg.

A team of researchers will be cheering him on and noting the smart leg's performance. When Vawter goes home to Yelm, Wash., where he lives with his wife and two children, the experimental leg will stay behind in Chicago. Researchers will continue to refine its steering. Taking it to the market is still years away.

"Somewhere down the road, it will benefit me and I hope it will benefit a lot of other people as well," Vawter said about the research at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

"Bionic" ? or thought-controlled ? prosthetic arms have been available for a few years, thanks to pioneering work done at the Rehabilitation Institute. With leg amputees outnumbering people who've lost arms and hands, the Chicago researchers are focusing more on lower limbs. Safety is important. If a bionic hand fails, a person drops a glass of water. If a bionic leg fails, a person falls down stairs.

The Willis Tower climb will be the bionic leg's first test in the public eye, said lead researcher Levi Hargrove of the institute's Center for Bionic Medicine. The climb, called "SkyRise Chicago," is a fundraiser for the institute with about 2,700 people climbing. This is the first time the climb has played a role in the facility's research.

To prepare, Vawter and the scientists have spent hours adjusting the leg's movements. On one recent day, 11 electrodes placed on the skin of Vawter's thigh fed data to the bionic leg's microcomputer. The researchers turned over the "steering" to Vawter.

He kicked a soccer ball, walked around the room and climbed stairs. The researchers beamed.

Vawter likes the bionic leg. Compared to his regular prosthetic, it's more responsive and more fluid. As an engineer, he enjoys learning how the leg works.

It started with surgery in 2009. When Vawter's leg was amputated, a surgeon repositioned the residual spaghetti-like nerves that normally would carry signals to the lower leg and sewed them to new spots on his hamstring. That would allow Vawter one day to be able to use a bionic leg, even though the technology was years away.

The surgery is called "targeted muscle reinnervation" and it's like "rewiring the patient," Hargrove said. "And now when he just thinks about moving his ankle, his hamstring moves and we're able to tell the prosthesis how to move appropriately."

To one generation it sounds like "The Six Million Dollar Man," a 1970s TV show featuring a rebuilt hero. A younger generation may think of Luke Skywalker's bionic hand.

But Hargrove's inspiration came not from fiction, but from his fellow Canadian Terry Fox, who attempted a cross-country run on a regular artificial leg to raise money for cancer research in 1980.

"I've run marathons, and when you're in pain, you just think about Terry Fox who did it with a wooden leg and made it halfway across Canada before cancer returned," Hargrove said.

Experts not involved in the project say the Chicago research is on the leading edge. Most artificial legs are passive. "They're basically fancy wooden legs," said Daniel Ferris of the University of Michigan. Others have motorized or mechanical components but don't respond to the electrical impulses caused by thought.

"This is a step beyond the state of the art," Ferris said. "If they can achieve it, it's very noteworthy and suggests in the next 10 years or so there will be good commercial devices out there."

The $8 million project is funded by the U.S. Department of Defense and involves Vanderbilt University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Rhode Island and the University of New Brunswick.

Vawter and the Chicago researchers recently took the elevator to the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower to see the view after an afternoon of work in the lab. Hargrove and Vawter bantered in the elevator in anticipation of Sunday's event.

Hargrove: "Am I allowed to trash talk you?"

"It's fine," Vawter shot back. "I'll just defer it all to the leg that you built."

At the top, Vawter stood on a glass balcony overlooking the city. The next time he heads to the top, he and the bionic leg will take the stairs.

Cosmopolitan Living | Creative Home X

08 October 2012,
A duplex condo owner in Damansara Perdana has created an intriguing home with a beachside theme combined with ethnic accessories and antiques.

Having lived overseas for years in countries such as Turkmenistan, New Zealand and Sudan, condo owner Shahreen Deelaila Ramzi has developed a cosmopolitan taste in her interior design concept.

Her duplex condo unit at Damansara Perdana in Selangor, which she shares with her husband and young son, showcases her fondness for cultural artifacts.
Shahreen?s corner unit spans 248sq m (2,670sq ft), and is decorated with an eclectic mix of furniture with clean-cut lines and antiques as well as furnishings with ethnic motifs in bright colours.

??I grew up in a house where art, culture, music and ethnic artifacts existed in every corner. Well, several houses to be exact, since my family lived in different countries due to my dad?s job,? says Shahreen, when asked how her condo home reflects her personality.
?I reckon my upbringing has something to do with the way I designed this home. When my husband and I decided to buy this unit, I knew that I wanted my child to be surrounded by the same elements I grew up with.?

It has been eight months since Shahreen and her family moved into this duplex in Damansara Perdana. For Shahreen, it was an easy decision.
?My family home in Malaysia is in the same building. They have been away in Sudan for several years, but now they are back in Kuala Lumpur. Obviously, I?m happy to live near my family,? says the psychology graduate from the University of Auckland.
As there was no structural renovation, it only took Shahreen six months to complete the interior design her own home.
?

Casual elegance
?My objective is to create a living space that has a laid-back beach atmosphere to it. But I also wanted to incorporate beautiful ethnic items from the various places I grew up,? points out Shahreen.
She realised that combining an interior concept with ethnic accessories and beach house elements wasn?t going to be easy. Fortunately, Shahreen?s mother is the noted interior decorator Winnie Choo Abdullah.
Winnie, known for her exquisite taste in antiques, lent her daughter a helping hand. To conjure a casual beachside mood, Winnie and Shahreen decided to paint the walls an icy grey shade on the first level, and a sandy champagne tone on the upper level.
The mother-and-daughter team designed a wooden chair and sofa for the living room. Winnie also designed her grandson?s bedroom, which is plastered with Winnie the Pooh wallpaper.
At the dining area, there?s a garden table bought from a shop in Sungai Buloh. According to Shahreen, the round table is perfect for dining, as it enhances the casual ambience of the home. Adding to the marine theme is a pair of starfish in the living room.
?One of the enduring attractions of a beach home is its simplicity; It allows you to be completely casual,? remarks Shahreen.

Unique antiques
While many young couple favours a modern, minimalist design, Shahreen insists that her home should be warm and inviting. ?A lot of people find my interior decor taste a tad too heavy, especially when they know my age. But I grew up in beautiful homes where more is more,? she adds.

Much like her family home, designed by her mother, Shahreen?s condo unit feels warm and welcoming. The first level consists of the living room, dining area, balcony and guest-room-turned-art-studio. There?s also a kitchen, which extends to the maid?s room. Here, Shahreen?s artful collectibles come to life.

She decorated the living room with a number of antique accessories, namely flat-woven, tapestry-like carpets (also known as Kilims) from Turkmenistan and a cabinet with a built-in rice container from China. The latter, Shahreen points out, is a wedding gift from her mother.

?This (rice container) is rather special. My mum kept it for years. The fact that it is a rice container is very appropriate for a new family like mine, as it symbolises something that is fundamentally familial,? says Shahreen.

While there are many pretty items, the decorative lamps that adorn the living and dining area stand out the most. Shahreen bought them from her mother?s acquaintance, who acquired the lamps in Turkey and Morocco.

Admittedly, the beach home theme is a rather curious backdrop for an interior full of antiques. But Shahreen?s concept opts for a pared down look and celebrates the patina of genuine antiques.

Indeed, the young mother is brilliant in the way she combines two very different design concepts. There?s a deliberate but calculated neglect here and there, which makes the home look effortlessly decorated and intriguing.

MassGOP Sends Letter To SJC Questioning Recent Comments By Michael Fredrickson That ?Appear To Advance A Partisan Agenda?

Boston- Today, MassGOP Chairman Bob Maginn sent the following letter to the Honorable Chief Justice Roderick L. Ireland of the Supreme Judicial Court regarding recent comments made by Board of Bar Overseers General Counsel, Michael Fredrickson. The letter raises concerns about Mr. Fredrickson?s public comments that ?appear to advance a partisan agenda that is inconsistent with any agency within the judicial branch.?

Supreme Judicial Court
The Honorable Roderick L. Ireland
John Adams Courthouse
One Pemberton Square, Suite 2500
Boston, MA 02108

October 8, 2012

RE: Michael Fredrickson

Dear Chief Justice Ireland:

I am writing to express concern that the Board of Bar Overseers General Counsel Michael Fredrickson has made public comments without the benefit of any investigation or due process regarding legality of U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren?s practice of law from her office in Cambridge without admission to the Massachusetts bar. Mindful that Attorney Fredrickson has a fine reputation as General Counsel to the Board of Bar Overseers (?BBO?), a fictional writer, and law professor, I am nonetheless compelled to make your office aware of his recent public statements, as follows:

? ?Michael Fredrickson, general counsel for the BBO, says he does not believe a law professor would be considered to have ?a continuous presence? or ?an office practicing law.? ?If they actually practice here ? as some part-time law professors at some of the smaller schools do ? they might,? Fredrickson says. ?But being a professor at one of the large schools, their office is a professor?s office, and the fact that they tend to dabble in the practice of law doesn?t run afoul of our rule. I don?t think Elizabeth Warren would fall within that, such that she would have to register here.? (Lisa Keen, ?Warren law license matter called non-issue,? Mass Lawyers Weekly, 9/24/12).

? ?Fredrickson stated that he did not purport to determine whether Warren violated the applicable law. He said he was just ?speaking hypothetically? and not specifically as to Warren because ?I know so little about Elizabeth Warren and her practice.?? (http://legalinsurrection.com/2012/09/no-mass-board-of-bar-overseers-has-not-exonerated-elizabeth-warren/)

? ?Fredrickson confirmed that he did make the comments attributed to him in MLW, but also made clear that he was not speaking on behalf of the BBO. Fredrickson said it was his ?personal reading? of the law, and that he was ?not speaking on behalf of the Board of Bar Overseers.?? (http://legalinsurrection.com/2012/09/no-mass-board-of-bar-overseers-has-not-exonerated-elizabeth-warren/)

Taking into consideration the honored tradition of the Supreme Judicial Court (?SJC?) and the BBO with regard to not politicizing the carrying out of your respective responsibilities, Mr. Fredrickson?s public comments appear to advance a partisan agenda that is inconsistent with any agency within the judicial branch. Foremost, Mr. Fredrickson?s statements arrived in the public dialogue devoid of any formal investigation, fact finding, or proper evaluation. Further, upon consultation with counsel, I understand Mr. Fredrickson?s conclusions to be incorrect. As a threshold, the part-time practice of law is not any less the practice of law; and, without an appropriate exception to the Rules of Professional Conduct, a license is required for the practice of law in the Commonwealth. Lastly, while I notice Mr. Fredrickson?s repackaged his statements as those of his own and not of the BBO they still may be attributable as opinions of the SJC and the BBO without a formal correction.

In view of the aforementioned, it may be appropriate for the SJC or the BBO to issue a statement recognizing the lack of authority and enforceability of Mr. Fredrickson?s personal views. Accordingly, with this correspondence, I deferentially request that the SJC issue a statement or direct the BBO to issue a statement to that effect.

Respectfully,

Bob Maginn

Polycom seeks edge over rivals with new videoconferencing product

(Reuters) - Polycom, which competes with Cisco in videoconferencing, hopes to move ahead of the pack with its new cloud-based product in a market it says will be worth $12 billion by 2015.

Videoconferencing is on the brink of widespread adoption as technology moves from expensive and complex boardroom products to technology that allows video communication on desktops, smartphones and tablets, and vendors are scrambling for their piece of the pie.

"Video is becoming more and more mission-critical, but it has not been taken up massively because of interoperability issues and inconsistent user experiences," said Sudhakar Ramakrishna, president of Products and Services at Polycom.

Polycom said on Monday that its RealPresence CloudAXIS Suite addresses those problems because it will let customers add anyone on Skype, Facebook, Google Talk and other business video applications to their video conferences from a browser via a hyperlink.

The product will be available to service providers and large businesses by the end of the first quarter, but Polycom will be running limited trial runs in the current quarter, the company said.

Polycom has been at pains to fend off larger rival Cisco, which dominates the videoconferencing market with its Telepresence virtual conference rooms, and competitors that offer free technology such as Microsoft's Skype, Google and Apple's face time.

The success of the cloud-based product is vital to Polycom, which still generates most of its revenue from hardware-based systems as it shifts to a software-based model while rivals muscle in on its turf.

That transition is expected to impact earnings over the next 12 to 18 months, analysts have said.

At the same time, rivals such as privately held companies Blue Jeans Networks, Vidyo and Avaya as well as business software maker Citrix are making inroads with their own technologies.

However, Forrester Research analyst Philipp Karcher said Polycom's product was impressive even if it was not the game changer Polycom claimed it is.

"It is an evolution," Karcher said, adding that there was a lot of interest in browser-based video conferencing but that Cisco "is also moving very aggressively into the web browser paradigm with WebEx and WebEx."

Polycom's announcement may also be a preemptive move to make itself more independent of Microsoft, which is a key user of Polycom products in its Lync corporate video, email and messaging product.

It is still unclear how Microsoft will incorporate Skype, but Polycom has acknowledged in its annual report the risk that its products could be replaced by Skype.

Mizuho Securities analyst Joanna Makris has said an integration of Skype into Lync would mean "game over" for Polycom.

Polycom's Ramakrishna said the product announcement did not change the company's relationship with Microsoft, which was "a key strategic partner."

Jack Dorsey Confirms He No Longer Has An ... - Business Insider

This just in from Jack Dorsey's personal blog:

There was a?great profile?in the New York Times about Twitter?s CEO, Dick Costolo, which mentioned my work at the company. It?s not a common arrangement, so I?d like to clarify a few points.

In Spring of 2011, Dick asked me to take an operational role overseeing product, design, and brand. Our shared goal was to get those organizations back under him as soon as possible, simply because it was the right thing to do for the company. We moved all of my reports back under him in January of this year after leadership was firmly in place. This allowed me to focus on refining our brand and logo, to work more with Dick and the leadership team on our direction forward, and ultimately return the majority of my time to Square, where I?m CEO. I?m back to going to Twitter on Tuesday afternoons, something I started before taking the interim operational role.

We haven?t talked about this publicly because it?s not what people using Twitter every day care about.

I?m fortunate in life to be a part of two foundational and mission-driven organizations, and I?m always going fight like hell to?make them thrive. And they are! Now back to our work.

'Voice' singers ready for battles, welcome twist

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

The talent showdown is about to get even tougher on "The Voice" as the one-on-one, teammate vs. teammate battle rounds begin Monday night. But that's not all that's on the way.

Team Adam (Levine) contestants Collin McLoughlin and Bryan Keith visited TODAY Monday morning to give their takes on a new twist that could give one of them a chance to stay in the game even if the battle goes badly.

The "steal" allows other coaches a chance to take the loser of the battle for their own team.

"I'd be happy if anyone wants to steal me," Collin said in anticipation of his faceoff with Bryan. "And if that were to happen, I'd have a tough decision, depending on who it is. Hopefully, I either win, or that happens."

As for Bryan, he's going into it with a laid-back approach.

"It's just ? do your thing and enjoy it," he said.

Check out the clip above to hear what else Collin and Bryan have to say about the competition and get a sneak peak of their battle round with a live performance.

"The Voice" airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on NBC.
