Brain structure of infants predicts language skills at one year

Jan. 22, 2013 ? Using a brain-imaging technique that examines the entire infant brain, researchers have found that the anatomy of certain brain areas ? the hippocampus and cerebellum ? can predict children's language abilities at 1 year of age.

The University of Washington study is the first to associate these brain structures with future language skills. The results are published in the January issue of the journal Brain and Language.

"The brain of the baby holds an infinite number of secrets just waiting to be uncovered, and these discoveries will show us why infants learn languages like sponges, far surpassing our skills as adults," said co-author Patricia Kuhl, co-director of the UW's Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences.

Children's language skills soar after they reach their first birthdays, but little is known about how infants' early brain development seeds that path. Identifying which brain areas are related to early language learning could provide a first glimpse of development going awry, allowing for treatments to begin earlier.

"Infancy may be the most important phase of postnatal brain development in humans," said Dilara Deniz Can, lead author and a UW postdoctoral researcher. "Our results showing brain structures linked to later language ability in typically developing infants is a first step toward examining links to brain and behavior in young children with linguistic, psychological and social delays."

In the study, the researchers used magnetic resonance imaging to measure the brain structure of a mix of 19 boys and girls at 7 months of age. The researchers used a measurement called voxel-based morphometry to determine the concentration of gray matter, consisting of nerve cells, and of white matter, which make up the network of connections throughout the brain.

The study is the first to relate the outcomes of this whole-brain imaging technique to predict future ability in infants. The whole-brain approach freed the researchers from having to select a few brain regions for study ahead of time, ones scientists might have expected to be involved based on adult data.

Five months later, when the children were about 1 year old they returned to the lab for a language test. This test included measures of the children's babbling, recognition of familiar names and words, and their ability to produce different types of sounds.

"At this age, children typically don't say many words," Deniz Can said. "So we rely on babbling and the ability to comprehend language as a sign of early language mastery."

Infants with a greater concentration of gray and white matter in the cerebellum and the hippocampus showed greater language ability at age 1. This is the first study to identify a relationship between language and the cerebellum and hippocampus in infants. Neither brain area is well-known for its role in language: the cerebellum is typically linked to motor learning, while the hippocampus is commonly recognized as a memory processor.

"Looking at the whole brain produced a surprising result and scientists live for surprises. It wasn't the language areas of the infant brain that predicted their future linguistic skills, but instead brain areas linked to motor abilities and memory processing," Kuhl said. "Infants have to listen and memorize the sound patterns used by the people in their culture, and then coax their own mouths and tongues to make these sounds in order join the social conversation and get a response from their parents."

The findings could reflect infants' abilities to master the motor planning for speech and to develop the memory requirements for keeping the sound patterns in mind.

"The brain uses many general skills to learn language," Kuhl said. "Knowing which brain regions are linked to this early learning could help identify children with developmental disabilities and provide them with early interventions that will steer them back toward a typical developmental path."

Todd Richards, a UW professor of radiology, was another co-author. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Santa Fe Institute Consortium.

Gerard Depardieu's latest drama: a Russian passport (+video)

Russian President Vladimir Putin has given a Russian passport to the famous French movie star in what some see as part of an escalating war of words between Russia and the West.

By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / January 3, 2013

In this December 2010 file photo, then-Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin (r.) and French actor Gerard Depardieu (l.) attend the Russian Museum, in St. Petersburg. Depardieu, the French actor who has been sparring with his native country over taxes, has been granted Russian citizenship. A brief announcement on the Kremlin website said President Putin signed the citizenship grant on Thursday, Jan. 3.

Vladimir Putin flourished his pen Thursday morning and signed what must be the oddest decree of his long years in power: an order granting a Russian passport to French actor and tax exile Gerard Depardieu.

A terse announcement posted on the Kremlin website?noted that Mr. Putin acted "to satisfy an application for citizenship of the Russian Federation by Gerard Xavier Depardieu, who was born in 1948 in France."

Mr. Depardieu, star of over 170 films and possessing what is often politely referred to as a "colorful" public personality, has been locked in a high profile battle with France's new socialist government over an emergency tax that would levy a 75 percent rate on people earning more than $1.3 million. He recently renounced his French citizenship and took up residence in Belgium, which offers a friendlier tax regime for the super-rich.

France's high court struck down the law last week as "unconstitutional," but the government announced it will soon reintroduce the measure after taking the court's concerns into account.

It's not clear whether Depardieu actually applied for residence in Russia, which has a 13 percent flat income tax for all, but in a far-ranging press conference?last month Putin declared "If G?rard really wants to have a residence permit or a Russian passport, you can consider it done, the issue solved positively."

Putin also said that he has long enjoyed "kind, friendly, personal relations" with the French actor.

Come to Chechnya

Depardieu is no stranger to Russia. He has appeared in several ad campaigns and filmed the 2011 movie Rasputin in St. Petersburg. He is also rumored to be close to Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov, and was guest of honor at the pro-Kremlin leader's birthday party in Grozny last October.

Mr. Kadyrov has said that he would happily invite Depardieu to come and live permanently in Chechnya if he wanted to. "If the country's leadership decides in favor of granting Depardieu Russian citizenship, we will be glad to create deserved conditions for the great cultural figure in our republic," Kadyrov said last week.

Russia's blogosphere erupted in derision and sarcastic comment Thursday, with some people writing painfully of their own troubles with Russia's notoriously bureaucratic passport department.

One man posted on Facebook his own tale of trying for years to repatriate his own Russian-born elderly mother from next-door Belarus, but he has so far failed to move Russian authorities because her Belarussian documents show a slightly different spelling of her name than appears on her Russian birth certificate.

Part of spat with West?

Sergei Strokan, a foreign affairs columnist with the liberal Moscow daily Kommersant, says the granting of citizenship to Depardieu should be seen in context with the escalating war of words between Russia and the West. Last month President Barack Obama signed the Magnitsky Act, which aims to punish corrupt Russian officials, and Moscow responded by enacting the Dima Yakovlev Act, whose main feature is a ban on US citizens adopting Russian orphans.

"Russia is very much on the defensive right now. The vindictive nature of Russia's adoption ban has shocked not only the US, but also many in Europe and here in Russia as well," Mr. Strokan says.

"We seem to be entering into a cold war-like battle of images, in which Russia is trying to show that it offers a better life, has higher ideals, and is more friendly to humanity than the West.... ?So this may be seen as a calculated PR move, an effort to demonstrate that we understand and care for the beloved French actor more than his own homeland does," he adds.

"I can't imagine that Depardieu would actually want to live here and experience the life of Russians, though. Let's see how it goes the first time he attempts to travel with that new Russian passport."

Nvidia unveils Project Shield, an open mobile game console you ...

Nvidia chief executive Jen-Hsun Huang announced something that looked pretty awesome tonight. He unveiled Project Shield, an Android tablet computer running Nvidia?s new Tegra 4 processor, accompanied by a game controller designed for hardcore gaming fans.

shield 2It?s like a miniature game console that you can carry with you. The Shield is attached directly to the game console that comes with it, so you can carry both devices around easily. You can then attach the Shield via an HDMI cable to your high-definition tablet. And you can then play Android games on a television with a big screen.

In an event at the Rain nightclub in the Palms hotel in Las Vegas on the eve of the Consumer Electronics Show, Huang showed it working with an LG TV with 4K Ultra HD resolution, or 4K by 2K, or four times as much detail as a 1080p HD TV.

Nvidia designed the entertainment device around its Tegra 4 processor, so that you can enjoy it either as a mobile gaming device or a living room game console.

Huang emphasized that one of the prime benefits of the Shield system is that it is open, accessing games on the Android store or the PC. The device has industry-standard input-output ports, including HDMI, micro-USB, and other slots. It also has a customizable tag.

?This is the first time you can see a 4K video coming off of a mobile device,? Huang said, as he played a video from the Android device on the big-screen TV.

shield 3

The console can play games on Nvidia?s TegraZone site for Android games. Even better, it can play a game that is stored on a PC. You can use the Project Shield game controller to play the game, which then can be streamed to your big-screen TV. Now that?s pretty cool.

?This is the culmination of five years of work,? Huang said. ?You can enjoy it on the small display or enjoy the same game on your television.?

Huang showed demos of games such as the newest Need for Speed and Assassin?s Creed III, being played with the Shield controller via the PC, which streamed the game images to the TV.

Huang also showed Shield working with games on Valve?s Steam network, accessible via the ?PC. Huang said that Shield will be able to access cloud games via Nvidia?s Grid Gaming System.

?It allows us to enjoy any game on any device on any screen,? he said. ?This is untethered gaming.?

After the press event was over, the party started. An Nvidia executive told me that the company itself will make and sell the Shield. It will probably launch the device in the second quarter, with pricing to be determined.

Check out some videos from the event below.

Taylor Swift And Harry Styles Break Up [Exclusive] - Business Insider

After Taylor Swift, 23, and One Direction boy bander Harry Styles, 18, shared a kiss on New Year's Eve in New York City following Swift's Times Square performance, the couple jetted off for a romantic holiday in Virgin Gorda?? but not everything went according to plan.

The couple arrived at Virgin Gorda?? the third largest of the British Virgin Islands known for its "yacht clubs, quiet coves, safe anchorages and luxury resorts and villas"?? on Tuesday, Jan. 1, and even posed for photos with fans at the local CocoMaya restaurant:

But on Friday, Jan. 4, Swift caught the first flight out of Virgin Gorda and headed back to the states after getting into a heated argument with Styles that ended the two-month relationship, according to a source close to One Direction.

Styles, meanwhile, island-hopped over to Richard Branson's private Necker Island as soon as Swift departed.

"Richard Branson heard Harry was staying nearby so invited him to come check out Necker," the source tells Business Insider. "So when Taylor left for the states, Harry went to Branson's island for the day to let off some steam."

While Styles only stayed on Necker Island for a short while and later returned to Virgin Gorda solo, a source says "he did plenty of partying and was definitely enjoying himself while hanging out with guests. He returned to Virgin Gorda in the early morning hours looking like he had a raucous night."

Photos of Styles in a hot tub alongside Branson and other island guests?have just hit the web:

After a kite surfing lesson, Styles even took time to pose shirtless with fans:

Apparently Styles had been meaning to check out Necker Island anyhow as he is currently scoping out locations for his 21st birthday bash ... in two-and-a-half years.

But the party was short-lived, as Styles headed back to the UK solo on Sunday where he was spotted taking photos with fans at Heathrow airport.

Swift has remained mum on the split, but did tweet this ominous message on Saturday:

Twitter.com/TaylorSwift13

She hasn't posted anything since, but the singer's (whose lucky number is 13) previous tweet was full of hope:

Twitter.com/TaylorSwift13

Looks like 2013 is going to be rockier for Swift than expected.

After taking a pre-Christmas couples ski getaway in Park City, Utah with besties Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, today both couples are reportedly kaput as Bieber and Gomez also departed a New Year's getaway in Mexico earlier than expected.

Whether Swift and Styles are as on-again, off-again as their pals remains to be seen.

Inquiries to reps for Swift and Styles have not yet been returned.

Why the NYSE merger may hurt average investors - The Term Sheet ...

nyse_building2FORTUNE -- Observers have long been worried about the New York Stock Exchange's ability to police stock trading so that it's fair for all investors. The acquisition by the InterContinental Exchange (ICE), which in late-December agreed to buy the NYSE (NYX) for $8.2 billion, may make matters worse.

Historically, the NYSE has been what's called a self-regulating organization. The Securities and Exchange Commission looks over its shoulder, but basically the NYSE is in charge of what goes on on its exchange. It creates and enforces the rules, and makes sure they don't favor some investors - namely the large banks - over others.

"The challenge for self-regulatory organizations is balancing the public interest and the economic interest of its members," says Joel Seligman, who is the President of the University of Rochester and an expert on the NYSE and regulation. He is also a board member of FINRA, a member organization that regulates brokerage firms. "The NYSE has done a good job of this, but some organizations have done a better job of the balancing act than others."

If the takeover by ICE goes through, though, the responsibility of regulating the nation's largest stock market will ultimately fall on the shoulders of the NYSE's new owner. And while most observers, at least until recently, believe self-regulation has worked well for the stock market, the same can't be said of the business in which ICE makes its money - derivatives.

Here's the issue: even more than the stock business, the derivatives market is dominated by a few players. Four large banks - JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Citigroup (C), Bank of America (BAC) and Goldman Sachs (GS) - account for nearly 95% of all derivatives exposure in the U.S.

Dennis Kelleher, who runs investor advocacy group Better Markets, says those four banks have a large influence over ICE. Even after ICE adds the NYSE's significant stock business, ICE will still make the bulk of its profits in derivatives. The worry is that the banks might use their influence over ICE to tilt the rules that govern stock trading at the NYSE in their favor, hurting individual investors.

ICE has been accused of collusion before. Competitors such as Bank of New York Mellon and Newedge have complained that ICE and its largest customers - namely those four large banks - have sought to restrict competition. Kelleher and others have said this may be leading to worse prices for investors and users of derivative contracts, which companies buy to hedge everything from energy prices to the risk that one of their suppliers could go out of business.

"It must never be forgotten that the history of these markets is a history of anti-competitive, self-interested, predatory conduct that serves the interest of the exclusive few at the expense of the many and the system as a whole," wrote Kelleher in a comment letter to the Securities and Exchange Commission on how proposed rules in Dodd-Frank should be applied in the derivatives market.

MORE: Why the ICE is only deal that makes sense for the NYSE

Robert Litan, a former top antitrust official at the Department of Justice who is now the director of research at Bloomberg Government, said he didn't think the merger would change the way the NYSE regulates trading, which has traditionally been done differently in the derivatives and stock markets.

ICE and its main competitor the Chicago Mercantile Exchange have kept all their regulation responsibilities in house. The NYSE has kept rule writing in house, but outsourced the monitoring and regulation of brokers to FINRA, which is a non-profit collectively owned by the brokerage firms, in recent years. Experts say FINRA is likely to retain that regulatory authority at the NYSE. Neither ICE nor NYSE have commented on how regulation will be handled after the merger.

MORE: Why the so-so jobs numbers are better than you think

In the last year or so, lawmakers and even some Wall Streeters have become increasingly worried about the NYSE's ability to police itself. In September, the SEC fined the NYSE $5 million to settle allegations that the exchange gave access to traded data to certain high frequency trading firms ahead of the general public.

In mid-December, the Senate Banking Committee held a hearing on the NYSE and stock trading. At the hearing, Credit Suisse's Dan Mathisson argued that it no longer made sense to allow the NYSE and other exchanges to continue regulating themselves. "Exchanges have long been considered by courts to be quasi governmental entities," Mathisson told the committee. "But exchanges today are clearly not governmental entities. They are for-profit, private companies."

MORE: Why the NYSE flip-flopped on electronic trading after Sandy

The acquisition by ICE, which unlike the NYSE has never been a non-profit, makes it even more clear that exchanges care more about investors than their customers. And it puts the NYSE's ability to regulate itself that much more into question.

"The emergence of increasingly different trading rules and venues for institutions and individual investors is one of the biggest issues regulators will have to tackle," Seligman says.

It's an issue that the NYSE can't be allowed to tackle on its own.

Gone Daddy Gone

For her 23rd birthday, a friend of the Portland cartoonist Nicole Georges treated her to a visit to a psychic, who hinted to her that her father was, counter everything her family had told her, still alive. In her tart, honest graphic memoir Calling Dr. Laura, Georges tells the story of how that soothsaying?true, as it turned out?changed her life, and forced her to confront (and come out to) her headstrong Midwestern mother.

Georges? black-and-white artwork is wonderfully adaptable in Calling Dr. Laura. In scenes of her childhood her cartoons are deceptively primitive; in later scenes she uses detailed ink work to bring herself, her pets, her friends, and her lovers to life. We?re very excited to have Nicole Georges illustrating the January issue of the Slate Book Review.

Fantastic Ways To Stop Yourself From Snoring Today - Health Care

While virtually everyone snores at one point or another in life, some people experience it much more frequently than normal. If you think you snore too much and you wish to stop, try reading this article.

Ask your pharmacist to recommend a remedy to stop your snoring. Prescription remedies are also available, but if over-the-counter versions work, you will have less of an expense. The treatment should battle the swelling, and any other issues that narrow air passages.

You will probably not be as likely to snore if you avoid sleeping on your back. Sew a pocket onto the back of the nightwear you wear, and put a tennis ball in the pocket. If you do happen to roll onto your back, the object will cause discomfort, which will cause you to change positions.

Snoring could be stress or psychologically-induced, so try getting into yoga or using some breathing techniques. The actions you take will help you be less troubled by your snoring, and also reduce your overall level of stress by letting you get better sleep.

If you are a smoker and you snore, you may want to consider quitting smoking. When smoking, the throat tissues towards the back can get irritated. When this occurs, it can cause swelling in your throat. Swelling of the throat is a main contributor to the reasons that snoring occurs.

If you suffer from snoring, avoid alcohol near bedtime. Alcohol has a relaxing effect on the body?s central nervous system, which can in turn increase the chance of snoring. You will snore more if your muscles are more relaxed. You can reduce your levels of snoring by reducing your consumption of alcohol. Drinking once in a while will not cause you to snore every night, but consuming alcohol regularly will damage your nervous system.

While they might help you sleep better, sleeping pills or alcohol are things that you should avoid when trying to stop snoring. These drugs cause the muscles to relax a lot, including the ones in your throat, and that only serves to make the snoring worse, and sometimes much louder. Discuss your sleeping difficulties with a doctor or other medical professional.

Alcohol and sleeping pills are known to cause snoring. Most drugs with a depressant or muscle-relaxant effect will slow down the nerves and make your jaw and throat muscles relax, potentially making your breathing easier. Muscles that are overactive can contribute to snoring. Use caution, as some of these chemicals can cause sleep apnea.

If you snore often, watch what you eat prior to going to sleep. Any kind of drug can relax your throat muscles to the point that you can?t breathe properly. Wine, beer and other alcohol have this effect on your throat, as do muscle relaxants. The result is that the muscles sag inwardly, blocking air and leading to snoring. If you must drink something before bedtime, make it water.

If you are having trouble dealing with a partner who tends to snore a lot, considering going to sleep before they do so you can at least have a fighting chance of getting some peaceful sleep. If you don?t sleep soundly, this may not work, but there?s no harm in trying it out.

As you can see, snoring is an issue that can be managed, even though it occurs while you sleep. Keep on using what you have learned here and soon you can snore a lot less.

Automakers in China brace for year of tepid growth as Japanese struggle

BEIJING/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Automakers in China are bracing for another year of tepid single-digit growth in 2013, weighed down by sluggish demand for Japanese cars amid a diplomatic row between the two regional neighbors and government measures intended to restrict traffic in bigger cities.

Executives at local and foreign carmakers in China predict the overall vehicle market will grow 5 to 10 percent this year, roughly in line with 2012, when demand was hit by a slowing economy and rising fuel costs.

Japanese carmakers will likely continue to struggle in 2013 after they saw their China sales plunge by about half in 2012 after anti-Japanese protests and boycotts of Japanese goods broke out in mid-September over a territorial dispute between the two governments.

"Japanese brands have been handicapped by the turmoil in the relationship between Japan and China. It's very difficult for one company to see how much this is going to damage the long-term prospects of Japanese companies," Carlos Ghosn, chief executive of Nissan Motor Co , told reporters in a year-end briefing in Tokyo.

"What we know today is we are still down to last year. Obviously, the impact is reducing, (but) it's still significant...Will it go ever to zero? I don't know," he said, adding he forecasts the overall China market to grow at a similar pace to 2012.

Half of a dozen senior industry executives in China expect the vehicle market grow at a single-digit pace this year, according to a recent poll conducted by an industry portal, gasgoo.com. The other half predict the market to grow by around 10 percent.

John Lawler, chairman and CEO of Ford Motor's China operations, has forecast 5 to 10 percent in the overall market, while Bob Socia, head of General Motors Co's China division, has said it was likely to grow by 5 to 8 percent.

During the first 11 months of 2012, overall vehicle sales rose 4 percent compared with the same period a year earlier. December has traditionally been a strong month for sales so analysts predict growth for the whole of 2012 will likely be around 5 to 6 percent.

The market grew 46 percent in 2009 and 32 percent in 2010, thanks mainly to government incentives that expired at the end of 2010. Growth fell to just 2.5 percent in 2011.

Adding to sluggish the performance of the Japanese manufacturers, further initiatives by local governments to restrict car sales to help ease the worsening traffic gridlock is likely to weigh on the overall market.

So far Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Guiyang in southwestern China have cut the number of license plates they issue. In Guangzhou, the measure, which was introduced in August, will cut annual vehicle sales by a third.

"Even a small city like Guiyang did it, so I won't be surprised if other cities follow suit sooner or later," said John Zeng, Asia Pacific director for industry consultancy, LMC Automotive.

Despite some headwinds, Zeng forecast passenger car sales to grow 10.2 percent in 2013, up slightly from around 7 percent as of end-November 2012. He says if it were not for the struggles of the Japanese makers, the market could grow as much as 13 percent.

Optimists argue that in addition to a recovering economy and pent-up auto demand in inland cities, China's new top leadership could introduce stimulus measures to spur domestic consumption that would help boost auto demand.

"There are reasons for such optimism. Whatever the market ends up with this year, I do expect an improvement of 3 to 5 percent above that," said Bill Russo, a senior adviser at Booz & Co.

Appendix Child Hospital Type Linked to Racial Disparities in Kids With Appendicitis Complication

FRIDAY, Jan. 4 (HealthDay News) ? The type of hospital in which minority children with appendicitis receive care may affect their chances of developing a perforated or ruptured appendix, according to a new study.

However, the study authors said that more research is needed to explain why this racial disparity exists and what steps can be taken to prevent it.

If not treated within one or two days, appendicitis can lead to a perforated appendix. As a result, this painful condition can serve as a marker for inadequate access to health care, the UCLA Medical Center researchers explained in a news release from the American College of Surgeons.

?Appendicitis is a time-dependent disease process that leads to a more complicated medical outcome, and that outcome, perforated appendicitis, has increased hospital costs and increased burden to both the patient and society,? according to study author Dr. Stephen Shew, an associate professor of surgery at UCLA Medical Center, and a pediatric surgeon at Mattel Children?s hospital in Los Angeles.

In conducting the study, Shew?s team examined discharge data on nearly 108,000 children aged 2 to 18 who were treated for appendicitis at 386 California hospitals between 1999 and 2007. Of the children treated, 53 percent were Hispanic, 36 percent were white, 3 percent were black, 5 percent were Asian and 8 percent were of an unknown race.

The researchers divided the children into three groups based on where they were treated: a community hospital, a children?s hospital or a county hospital.

After taking age, income level and other risk factors for a perforated appendix into account, the investigators found that among kids treated at community hospitals, Hispanic children were 23 percent more likely than white children to experience this condition. Meanwhile, Asian children were 34 percent more likely than whites to have a perforated appendix.

Among the children treated at children?s hospitals, the Hispanic children were 18 percent more likely to experience this complication than white children.

The racial disparity was not found at county hospitals. The study authors noted, however, that black patients treated at children?s and county hospitals had a higher risk for a perforated appendix than other black children treated at community hospitals.

?The goal is to figure out why these racial disparities exist and what interventions could be put in place to help eliminate them,? Shew said in the news release. He added that more research is needed on this topic, including if language barriers prevent access to care or affect patients? understanding of their symptoms.

?We don?t know what explains these findings; however we suspect that there are some other barriers in play,? Shew said. ?As investigators it behooves us to look further into prehospital factors that may contribute to this racial disparity and ultimately find what interventions can be implemented to provide much quicker access to care, so children can get treated more effectively.?

An estimated 80,000 children in the United States develop appendicitis each year. The condition is the most common reason for emergency abdominal surgery in children, according to background information in the news release.

The study was published in the January issue of the Journal of American College of Surgeons.

Great Advice On Marketing A Service Or Product Online - Maynas Eric

You can always learn new things about Internet promotion. Internet marketing is constantly evolving, and there will always be much to learn. The advice in this article will help your affiliate marketing business to improve.

Website marketing does not have to take place solely on the internet. For example, you can invite your advertisers and customers to an event you are hosting. This helps build a sense of community between the bloggers and your brand, helping the bloggers feel more enthusiastic about continuing to write about your brand.

Try to get inside the brain of your customers when creating your website. Providing what your customers desire can increase the chance that they will purchase. Consider asking your customers for unbiased opinions about your website. Seek the critique of a trusted friend, or ask for comments on a relevant forum. Conduct detailed research, analyze feedback and use that information to create a more effective and engaging website.

TIP! Take the time to learn the basic rules of web page layout and design. There is a lot of HTML information online to help you learn web design.

Use captions every time you use a picture on your website. Search engines factor in the relevancy of your caption text when determining if your site is a good fit for the keyword. Good captions can help to improve your rank.

Perform searches for online conversations and comments regarding your company?s brand, then incorporate the information you?ve learned into new strategies for your online marketing campaigns. People will feel more connected to you if they understand the language you are using. If you use the right verbiage, it?s much easier to connect with your audience.

For new marketing websites, sites that have a small number of quality pages do better than sites that attempt to pack in too much information. Start with a small site to achieve the best search results. Search engines may jump over a site with too many index pages.

TIP! Keep your advertising budget from growing out of control. You don?t want to invest money on something that will not help your business.

It?s a great idea to present your customers with a selection of special offers on you check-out page. You could also send an email with a special promotion to previous customers. It is a great way to clear out surplus inventory and increase sales, while letting the customer feel that he is getting a bonus.

Web marketing can be problematic, but you can fix it. Every day, you will have to solve problems in your business and help others as well. If you are in the position to solve a problem for someone, you are also in the position to turn them into a customer.

Your site needs to offer something unique. Advertise it heavily to attract customers to your site. The visitors then usually end up checking out other parts of your sites which eventually sends it up the search engine rankings.

TIP! Get feedback at every stage. It is important to ask people from various backgrounds for their opinion so that you can understand how your work is seen by others.

People who generate small sales will find that the Internet is extremely competitive. There are a couple things you can do to try and stay ahead of the game. You should re-price your items often to stay competitive with others in the same niche. It is also a good idea to set up an online storefront so your customers can access all of your products from one location.

Stay abreast of what your competition is doing. Check out the websites of competitors to look at their offers. Your goal is to create a better site that people will check instead of your competitors?.

Include some personal information in your campaign. Include your personal name in your advertisements; on your website, add a photo of yourself. It might be a good idea to have some sort of handwritten statement that welcomes your visitors to your site.

TIP! If you want to win over a customer have unique content. An e-book of genuinely useful advice or even some good cartoons that share your website?s focus can draw a lot of attention.

Personalize the correspondence you have with consumers. This helps to create a dialogue that is focused primarily on their interests. Aren?t you sick of bulk emails? A well-crafted and personalized message will be far more effective and really put you head and shoulders above your competitors.

Have your site filled with original and interesting content. You website should have unique content that attracts the watchful eye of the search engines, and which sets it apart from all the other sites in order to attract many customers to your site.

Luckily, there is a lot of information out there that can help. You will not need to study the topic extensively either. You can learn quite a bit from these tips. They are quick and easy to understand so you can use them with your Web marketing. Watch closely and be aware of your results so that you can constantly improve.

TIP! You can always market your site as a place for social conversation instead of it being a business. You can have more site traffic if people are communicating with others! This is an excellent way to keep people thinking about your website.

Risk genes for Alzheimer's and mental illness linked to brain changes at birth

Thursday, January 3, 2013

Some brain changes that are found in adults with common gene variants linked to disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, and autism can also be seen in the brain scans of newborns.

"These results suggest that prenatal brain development may be a very important influence on psychiatric risk later in life," said Rebecca C. Knickmeyer, PhD, lead author of the study and assistant professor of psychiatry in the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. The study was published by the journal Cerebral Cortex on Jan. 3, 2013.

The study included 272 infants who received MRI scans at UNC Hospitals shortly after birth. The DNA of each was tested for 10 common variations in 7 genes that have been linked to brain structure in adults. These genes have also been implicated in conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, autism, Alzheimer's disease, anxiety disorders and depression.

For some polymorphisms ? such as a variation in the APOE gene which is associated with Alzheimer's disease ? the brain changes in infants looked very similar to brain changes found in adults with the same variants, Knickmeyer said. "This could stimulate an exciting new line of research focused on preventing onset of illness through very early intervention in at-risk individuals."

But this was not true for every polymorphism included in the study, said John H. Gilmore, MD, senior author of the study and Thad & Alice Eure Distinguished Professor and Vice Chair for Research and Scientific Affairs in the UNC Department of Psychiatry.

For example, the study included two variants in the DISC1 gene. For one of these variants, known as rs821616, the infant brains looked very similar to the brains of adults with this variant. But there was no such similarity between infant brains and adult brains for the other variant, rs6675281.

"This suggests that the brain changes associated with this gene variant aren't present at birth but develop later in life, perhaps during puberty," Gilmore said.

"It's fascinating that different variants in the same gene have such unique effects in terms of when they affect brain development," said Knickmeyer.

100 billion alien planets fill our Milky Way galaxy

Our Milky Way galaxy is home to at least 100 billion alien planets, and possibly many more, a new study suggests.

"It's a staggering number, if you think about it," lead author Jonathan Swift, of Caltech in Pasadena, said in a statement. "Basically there's one of these planets per star."

Swift and his colleagues arrived at their estimate after studying a five-planet system called Kepler-32, which lies about 915 light-years from Earth. The five worlds were detected by NASA's Kepler Space Telescope, which flags the tiny brightness dips caused when exoplanets cross their star's face from the instrument's perspective.

The Kepler-32 planets orbit an M dwarf, a type of star that is smaller and cooler than our sun. M dwarfs are the most common star in the Milky Way, accouting for about 75 percent of the galaxy's 100 billion or so stars, researchers said.

Further, the five Kepler-32 worlds are similar in size to Earth and orbit quite close to their parent star, making them typical of the planets Kepler has spotted around other M dwarfs. So the Kepler-32 system should be representative of many of the galaxy's planets, scientists said. [The Strangest Alien Planets (Gallery)]

"I usually try not to call things 'Rosetta stones,' but this is as close to a Rosetta stone as anything I've seen," said co-author John Johnson, also of Caltech. "It's like unlocking a language that we're trying to understand ? the language of planet formation."

Kepler can detect planetary systems only if they're oriented edge-on to the telescope; otherwise, the instrument won't observe any star-dimming planetary transits. So the researchers calculated the odds that an M-dwarf system in the Milky Way would have this orientation, then combined that with the number of such systems Kepler is able to detect to come up with their estimate of 100 billion exoplanets.

The team considered only planets orbiting close to M dwarfs; their analysis didn't include outer planets in M-dwarf systems, or any worlds circling other types of stars. So the galaxy may actually harbor many more planets than the conservative estimate implies ? perhaps 200 billion, or about two per star, Swift said.

The new analysis confirms three of the five Kepler-32 planets (the other two had been confirmed previously). The Kepler-32 worlds have diameters ranging from 0.8 to 2.7 times that of Earth, and all of them orbit within 10 million miles (16 million kilometers) of their star. For comparison, Earth circles the sun at an average distance of 93 million miles (150 million km).

Because the Kepler-32 star is smaller and less luminous than our sun, the five planets are likely not as heat-blasted as their tight orbits might imply. In fact, the outermost planet in the system appears to lie in the habitable zone, a range of distances that could support the existence of liquid water on a world's system.

The new analysis also suggests that the Kepler-32 planets originally formed farther away from the star and then migrated closer in over time, researchers said.

Several pieces of evidence point toward this conclusion. For example, the team estimated that the five Kepler-32 worlds coalesced from material containing about as much mass as three Jupiters. But models suggest that this much gas and dust cannot be squeezed into the small area circumscribed by the planets' current orbits, researchers said.

"You look in detail at the architecture of this very special planetary system, and you're forced into saying these planets formed farther out and moved in," Johnson said.

The new study was published today (Jan. 2) in The Astrophysical Journal.

data recovery specialist

by Jason Davies on January 3, 2013

Data recovery is similar to brain surgery and requires a highly skilled technician to get your data back.? As a result, data recovery is costly; it should be used when you have data that you are serious about. Data Recovery is not something every computer store can do; it requires an expert who is trained in data recovery.

Each hard drive has unique features that tie it to the specific components on a drive.? The printed circuit board (PCB) is a board attached to the hard drive that many people think they can ?swap? if something goes wrong.? Before ever attempting to swap parts you need to ask, ?Do I know enough about electronics that my actions won?t damage this drive??? The reality is you probably don?t have a clue about the components on the PCB.? Capacitors, resistors, diodes, fuses, and ROM chips are some of the electronics on the PCB.? The ROM module stands for Read Only Memory and that means they contain information that is important for the function of the drive.? In fact, some drives will make clicking sounds without the right ROM information.

When you swap a PCB and the drive continues to click do you know what to do next?? Familiar with a ROM programmer and do you know what modules you need to rebuild a corrupt ROM module?? Hard drive components have many numbers on them too.? What happens if you put the wrong size capacitor on a circuit that cannot handle additional current?? The answer is you will blow up the device and you could potentially take out the pre-amp and hard drive heads in the process.

What you don?t know can hurt you even when you think you know the answer or Google it.? The more important question is how can you guarantee you are making the right move with components?? The answer is you don?t know without thousands of hours experience, training, and expert guidance.? Just because you read something on the internet about putting a hard drive in a freezer doesn?t mean it works for a modern hard drive.

The internet is great but much of the information is not recent.? The advice about freezing a hard drive came from a computer technician who found out that freezing certain types of metal will cause it to contract.? This was done over a decade ago too when drives were 200 megabytes in size not 2 and 4 terabytes.? ?The drives of old fit 200MB in the same space that is now occupied by a factor of 10000.

TechRx Inc. is a data recovery company and we are expensive and will never compromise quality to save a buck.? While you can find cheap places on the internet to fix a hard drive, you will never find an expert like Jason Davies.? There is a difference between a lost file and a drive that needs a delicate operation. I know if I had a serious health issue I would not bargain shop for my physician.? I would research the best course of treatment then consult with an expert who has treated similar cases.

When you choose cheap you are taking a risk that has an unknown outcome. You may get data back and be quite happy. Conversely, since you are not an expert at data recovery you may end up making your drive impossible to save. TechRx helps those who want their data back and are serious about results.

Shares steady after rally, dollar jumps

NEW YORK (Reuters) - World stocks stalled on Thursday as traders were cautious after equities hit an 18-month high, while the U.S. dollar climbed to a three-week high against a basket of currencies on concerns about more budget wrangling in Washington.

Data suggesting some momentum in the U.S. economy as the year ended showed private-sector employers stepped up hiring in December, allowing for the upward tick in stocks and further supporting the greenback.

President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans face two more months of tough talks on spending cuts and an increase in the nation's debt limit as the hard-fought deal to avert the "fiscal cliff" of automatic tax hikes and spending cuts covered only taxes and delayed decisions on expenditures until March 1.

"There's still some clouds over the horizon, with the fiscal issue of the government," said Jeff Meyerson, head of trading at Sunrise Securities in New York. "We don't know how they're going to pan out, but in all likelihood there's not going to be a calamity."

The MSCI world equity index <.miwd00000pus> advanced less than 0.1 percent, reversing a dip through most of the session after hitting an 18-month high on Wednesday.

A European equity benchmark <.fteu3> ended up 0.45 percent after hitting its highest intraday level since March 2011, boosted by a belated reaction in Swiss stocks due to a holiday.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was up 7.03 points, or 0.05 percent, at 13,419.58. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was up 1.57 points, or 0.11 percent, at 1,463.99. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was up 2.49 points, or 0.08 percent, at 3,114.75.

The euro tumbled against the dollar as investors grew worried about more budget fights ahead. Analysts say the market could be set up for volatility as Obama and congressional Republicans tussle over the next two months.

The dollar was up 0.4 percent against a basket of major currencies <.dxy> at a three-week high of 80.13, although it slipped 0.4 percent against the yen to 86.97.

"We really just kicked the can down the line and we're set up for another fight on the hill in the next month and a half or so," said John Doyle, currency strategist at Tempus Consulting in Washington.

The euro, which had touched an 8-1/2 month high against the dollar on Wednesday, was down 0.6 percent at $1.3110.

Investors will now turn their attention to Friday's December U.S. employment report. It is expected to show modest job growth of around 150,000, compared with 146,000 in November.

The ADP National Employment Report showed Thursday the U.S. private sector added 215,000 jobs in December, comfortably above economists' expectation of a 133,000 gain. Following the recent rally in equities, any disappointment in Friday's payrolls number could trigger a profit-taking sell-off.

DOLLAR JUMP HITS COMMODITIES

The dollar's strength and rising oil supplies pushed crude prices lower, with Brent down 0.1 percent to $112.31 a barrel. U.S. crude futures were down 0.1 percent at $93.15.

Analysts expect oil prices to drop in 2013 as supply outweighs demand, especially after U.S. crude production hit a 19-year high in 2012.

Gold futures followed commodities lower and were down about 0.6 percent at $1,676.41 an ounce.

Thursday's retreat across riskier asset markets might have been sharper but for data showing activity in China's services sector and at U.S. factories expanded in December, brightening the outlook for global growth.

China's official purchasing managers' index for the non-manufacturing sector rose to a four-month high in December, adding to signs of a revival in the world's second-largest economy.

U.S. Treasury debt prices eased, pushing yields to three-month highs after the U.S. private jobs data cut into the appeal of safe U.S. government issues. Treasuries had already sold off sharply on Wednesday following the U.S. government deal to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff."

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was down 7/32, the yield at 1.8618 percent, a 15-week high.

Ten Secrets About A Happy Relationship

The First Secret: THE POWER OF THOUGHT
Love begins with our thoughts. We became what we think about. Loving thoughts create loving experiences and loving relationships. Affirmations can change our beliefs and thoughts about others and ourselves. If we want to love someone, we need to consider their needs and desires. Thinking about your ideal partner will help you recognize her when you meet her.

The Second Secret: THE POWER OF RESPECT
You cannot love anyone or anything unless you first respect them. The first person you need to respect is yourself. To begin to gain self-respect ask yourself, What do I respect about myself? To gain respect for others, even those you may dislike, ask yourself What do I respect about them?

The Third Secret: THE POWER OF GIVING
If you want to receive love, all you have to do is give it! The more love you give, the more you will receive. To love is to give of yourself, freely and unconditionally. Practice random acts of kindness. Before committing to a relationship ask not what the other person will be able to give to you, but rather what will you be able to give them. The secret formula of a happy, life-long, loving relationship is to always focus on what you can give instead of what you can take.

The Fourth Secret: THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP
To find a true love, you must first find a true friend. Love does not consist of gazing into each other's eyes, but rather looking outward together in the same direction. To love someone completely you must love them for who they are, what they look like. Friendship is the soil through which love seeds grow. If you want to bring love into a relationship, you must first bring friendship.

The Fifth Secret: THE POWER OF TOUCH
Touch is one of the most powerful expression of love, breaking down barriers and bonding relationships. Touch changes our physical and emotional states and makes us more receptive to love.

The Sixth Secret: THE POWER OF LETTING GO
If you love something, let it free, if it comes back to you it's yours, if it doesn't it never was. Even in a loving relationships, people need their own space. If we want to learn to love, we must first learn to forgive and let go of past hurts, and grievances. Love means letting go of our fears, prejudices, egos and conditions. Today I let go of all my fears, the past has no power over me, today is the beginning of a new life.

The Seventh Secret: THE POWER OF COMMUNICATION
When we learn to communicate openly and honestly, life changes. To love someone is to communicate with them. Let the people you love know that you love them and appreciate them. Never be afraid to say those three magic words: I LOVE YOU! Never let an opportunity pass to praise someone. Always leave someone you love with a loving word, it could be the last time you see them. If you were about to die but could make telephone calls to people you loved, who would you call, what would you say...??? and what are you waiting?

The Eight Secret: THE POWER OF COMMITMENT
If you want to have love in abundance, you must be committed to it, and that commitment will be reflected in your thoughts and actions. Commitment is the true test of love. If you want to have loving relationships, you must be committed to loving relationships. When you are committed to someone or something, quitting is never an option. Commitment distinguishes a fragile relationship from a strong one.

The Ninth Secret: THE POWER OF PASSION
Passion ignites love and keeps it alive. Lasting passion does not come through physical attraction alone, it comes from deep commitment, enthusiasm, interest and excitement. Passion can be recreated by recreating past experiences when you felt passionate. Spontaneity and surprises produce passion. The essence of love and happiness are the same; all we need to do is to live each day with passion?

The Tenth Secret: THE POWER OF TRUST
Trust is the essential in all loving relationship. Without it one person becomes suspicious, anxious and fearful and the other person feels trapped and emotionally suffocated. You cannot love someone completely unless you trust them completely. Act as if your relationship with the person you love will never end. One of the ways you can tell whether a person is right for you is to ask yourself, Do I trust them completely and unreservedly? If the answer is no, think carefully before making commitment.

Apple testing new iPhone, iOS 7: report

(Reuters) - Apple Inc has started testing a new iPhone and the next version of its iOS software, news website The Next Web reported.

The company's shares rose as much as 4.3 percent but eased a little to trade up 3 percent at $546.11 by mid-day on the Nasdaq.

Application developers have found in their app usage logs references to a new iPhone identifier, iPhone 6.1, running iOS 7 operating system, the website reported.

Apple's iPhone 5 bears the identifiers "iPhone 5.1" and "iPhone 5.2" and is powered by the iOS 6 operating system.

Developer logs show that the app requests originate from an internet address on Apple's Cupertino campus, suggesting that Apple engineers are testing compatibility for some of the popular apps, the website said.

"Although OS and device data can be faked, the unique IP footprint leading back to Apple's Cupertino campus leads us to believe this is not one of those attempts," the website said.

Raymond James analyst Tavis McCourt, however, expects the next version of the iconic smartphone to be called iPhone 5S and not iPhone 6.

Apple typically tags the interim version of its phones with an "S" before moving on to a new version. iPhone 3GS followed iPhone 3G and the iPhone 4S followed iPhone 4.

McCourt also said he wouldn't be surprised if Apple looked at an earlier launch because of the stress on its supply chain caused by late-year launches.

Apple launched iPhone 5 in September and it has been reported that the new iPhone will be released in the middle of 2013.

Techradar.com reported last month that Apple could unveil the next version of its iPhone as early as the spring of 2013.
