Amid Palestinian protest, rocket hits Israel

? A daily summary of global reports on security issues.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas strained to tamp down tensions in the West Bank as Palestinians protested by the thousands and called for a third intifada, and militants in Gaza broke a November cease-fire by firing a rocket into southern Israel.

"The Israelis want chaos.... We will not allow them to drag us into it and to mess with the lives of our children and our youth," Mr. Abbas said, according to Reuters, as he sought to cool tensions and cast the uptick in Palestinian anger as a result of Israeli incitement.

But Abbas is up against formidable voices who seem to see another uprising as the inevitable result of days of large-scale protests across the West Bank against conditions for Palestinian inmates in Israeli prisons, sparked by the Feb. 23 death of one such inmate.

RECOMMENDED: How much do you know about Israel? Take the quiz

?This is the new intifada,? said Mustafa Barghouti, a rival to Abbas in the 2005 presidential election, according to Bloomberg. ?A popular resistance has started.? Calls for a third intifada come despite the fact that public sentiment still largely opposes a full uprising.

The Christian Science Monitor reported yesterday that the most recent protests come on top of frustration about the seemingly endless Israeli occupation and settlement growth, as well as Israeli and international inaction.

?The issue of the prisoners is only one point that created this eruption,? said Sheikh Issa Jaradat, the former mayor of Sair, at the funeral for deceased prisoner Arafat Jaradat. People filled every rooftop, balcony, and open patch of grass surrounding the village square as Jaradat?s coffin was carried through the crowd, sparking fierce whistling and a few gunshots.

?The fact that so many people are here shows that this is not just about the suffering of Sair. The whole West Bank is suffering,? says the sheikh. ?This could easily be the beginning of an intifada.?

But, as the Monitor reports, only 32 percent of Palestinians support a third intifada, according to a poll taken before the death of Arafat Jaradat, the Palestinian inmate. Sixty-five percent oppose it, with 41 percent of them saying it will hurt the Palestinian cause.

Indeed, such an uprising could work against Palestinian interests in several ways. It could bolster Israel?s argument that it has no partner for peace, enabling it to continue expanding settlements in the West Bank unfettered by negotiations. It could also provide Israeli justification for maintaining or increasing checkpoints, arrests, and administrative detention in the name of security.

Reuters reports that international leaders had hoped the unrest in the West Bank was dying down prior to the rocket attack from Gaza, for which the militant group Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility. The news agency described the attack as ?an apparent show of solidarity? with the protests. It was the first such attack since a cease-fire was signed in November to end eight days of Palestinian rocket fire and Israeli air strikes.

The Wall Street Journal reports that ?Israel is taking the unrest seriously,? with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu holding ?security consultations? yesterday and sending a representative to Ramallah to urge the Palestinian Authority (PA) to calm the protesters.

Mark Regev, a spokesman for Mr. Netanyahu, pinned blame for the protests, some of which turned violent, on PA officials, the Journal reports. "There were elements within the [Palestinian Authority] who were actually encouraging incitement and violence," Mr. Regev said. "The Palestinian Authority has an obligation to maintain law and order."

And Amos Gilad, an Israeli defense official, told Army Radio that ?It looks as if the Palestinian Authority is trying to walk a delicate tightrope: both raising unrest and displays of violence and not wanting the matter to spin out of control,? the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Blackstone seeks capital for Asia real estate fund | South China ...

Blackstone, one of the world's largest investment houses, is pitching to large institutional investors in Hong Kong and mainland China to help it launch a new real estate fund for Asia, where property prices are rising strongly.

Among the potential institutional investors, known as "limited partners" for their investments in private equity funds, that Blackstone has been talking to is China Investment Corp (CIC) in Beijing, and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), said people familiar with the matter.

CIC is the mainland's US$300 billion sovereign wealth fund, whose funding comes mostly from the country's massive foreign exchange reserves. The HKMA is the de facto central bank for Hong Kong and also manages the city's large reserves.

Both the CIC and the HKMA have a strong desire to diversify their investments abroad for stable and higher returns, rather than merely buying traditional assets such as foreign government bonds. China is already the largest holder of US debt.

"Both CIC and HKMA were pitched. Given their long-standing good business ties with Blackstone, I think it is very likely that both will put some money in its new real estate fund," said one of the people, who declined to be identified as the talks remain private and confidential.

Both CIC and HKMA were pitched. Given their long-standing good business ties with Blackstone, I think it is very likely that both will put some money in its new real estate fund

Blackstone began marketing its new Asia-dedicated property fund late last year and it aimed to raise a total of about US$2 billion for the fund, which would bet on large-sized property investments in major Asian economic powers such as China and India, said the sources.

Last October, Stephen Schwarzman, a co-founder and chairman of Blackstone, said during a brief visit to Hong Kong that his firm would not quit the mainland's property market despite growing concerns about the outlook of the real estate sector. Such worries come after years of efforts by Beijing to check rising property prices and speculation.

Blackstone, already one of the largest property investors globally, aimed to buy property assets at "discount for size", said Schwarzman during his last trip to the city.

Blackstone competes with a growing number of American rivals in Asia, such as KKR, TPG, and the Carlyle Group. Like all the other major global private equity funds, it is also keen to make direct investments in mainland firms, but real estate investments have played a more significant role for Blackstone given some successful stories in this sector in recent years, said the sources.

In China, Antony Leung Kam-chung, a former Hong Kong Financial Secretary, has been leading Blackstone's fund-raising efforts for years, after he was appointed the firm's top executive for the so-called greater China region including Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and the mainland. Thanks to Leung's good relations with Beijing, he has already managed to convince CIC to invest in some other Blackstone funds.

The fundraising process of Blackstone's new Asia-dedicated real estate fund is ongoing and the first closing period could be late this year, said the sources. Typically, a large government-backed institutional investor like CIC is expected to put several hundred million US dollars in one such fund.

[iPad] Moving saved data from an app's iPhone version to its iPad version.

Moving saved data from an app's iPhone version to its iPad version.

On my iPad, I've got the iPhone version of Plants vs. Zombies.

But this week, Plants vs. Zombies HD is free on the App Store, so of course I downloaded it for iPad. I want to move the saved game data from the iPhone version to the iPad (HD) version. And unfortunately, the developer is dumb and doesn't have iCloud syncing.

Any ideas on how to do this? Using iFile maybe to find the files that need to be moved?

Thanks.

Judge tosses suit by suburban coach who was fired after writing sex book

Updated: February 21, 2013 3:46PM

First, high school basketball coach Bryan Craig?s lurid, self-published book of questionable sex tips cost him his job.

Now it?s got another bum review ? from a federal judge, who has tossed out his $1 million lawsuit against the school administrators that fired him.

Craig hit the headlines last year after it emerged he had authored a book called ?It?s Her Fault? while working as a counselor and girl?s basketball coach at south suburban Rich Central High School. The book discussed in graphic detail Craig?s opinions on vaginal differences between women of different races, encouraged men to cheat on their partners and advised that ?the easiest kill for a man is through the young lady with low self-esteem.?

Fired in September by Rich Township High School District 227, he filed a federal lawsuit alleging his first amendment rights had been violated.

But in a scathing opinion issued this week, Judge Elaine Bucklo threw out the case ? and took a dig at Craig?s writing style.

Though Craig styled his tome a ?self-help? book, Bucklo dismissed it as ?little more than a lurid account of his own sexual preferences and exploits.?

?The first two chapters at least superficially discuss the balance of power between men and women in relationships,? the judge wrote. ?But by the third chapter plaintiff?s narration is focused on his own attraction to women, from ogling a ?sexy young lady? at the mall to working after-hours at a strip club...?

She said Craig had failed to prove his book met the burden of being ?a matter of public concern,? adding that the fact Craig self-published it, ?suggests that the book, though public, may not be a matter ?in which the public might be interested.??

In one particularly damning section of her opinion, she even compared his lawsuit to an unsuccessful San Diego one in which a police officer sued after he was fired for selling a video of himself masturbating on eBay.

Craig ?exploited his position as a high school guidance counselor and there is no question that the speech is detrimental to the mission and functions of the employer,? Bucklo wrote dismissing his lawsuit with prejudice, meaning he cannot re-file it.

Reached Thursday, Craig said he was disappointed but plans to appeal the ruling.

Japan Tobacco stock hit as $10 billion stake sale nears

TOKYO/HONG KONG | Tue Feb 19, 2013 11:01pm EST

TOKYO/HONG KONG (Reuters) - Japan's government is set to launch the sale of part of its stake in Japan Tobacco (2914.T), a move that hit the company's stock as investors sold ahead of the $10 billion offering.

Shares in the world's third-largest tobacco company tumbled as much as 5.9 percent on Wednesday, after Reuters reported that the sale would launch in the coming days.

The offering, the largest such deal since the U.S. Treasury's $20.7 billion sale of American International Group Inc (AIG.N) shares in September, comes as Japanese equities hover near their highest levels in more than four years.

Japan Tobacco shares were down 3.2 percent at 2,832 yen in late morning, having fallen to a three-week low of 2,752 yen. The sale of a large block of shares usually prompts a fall in the price because it will increase the supply of publicly traded stock in the market.

Banks, including the four underwriters hired to manage the offering, met on Tuesday to iron out details of the deal, sources told Reuters.

Conditions for a sell-down in the government's stake in the $62 billion dollar company have improved, with Japan's Nikkei share average .N225 up nearly 25 percent over the past three months to its highest level since September 2008.

Japan Tobacco shares rose about 21 percent over the same period, part of a broad market rally that began in mid-November after the calling of an early election that put Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in power a month later.

Abe has promised aggressive monetary and fiscal policies to tackle prolonged deflation.

APPETITE FOR BIG OFFERINGS

Japan's large and liquid stock market is used to digesting big offerings, such as the $8.5 billion IPO of Japan Airlines Co Ltd (9201.T) in September and a $2.3 billion follow-on deal by All Nippon Airways Co (9202.T).

Last month U.S. private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP CBS.UL raised about $1.7 billion by selling shares in Japan's Aozora Bank Ltd (8304.T).

Overall, equity issuance in Japan rose 16.8 percent in 2012 from a year earlier to $26.4 billion, driven by large IPOs and a flurry of activity that made it the busiest year for deals since 2008, Thomson Reuters data showed.

But the Japan Tobacco sale would be extraordinary.

The sale process is expected to be helped by both Tokyo's stock market rally of recent months and a promise by the company to buy back $3.1 billion of its shares. <ID: nL3E8FQ4YI>

"At the moment, appetite for Japanese stocks seems to be quiet smart," said a Tokyo trader, who did not want to be named.

JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N), Daiwa Securities Group Inc (8601.T), Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N) and Mizuho Securities were hired last June as underwriters for the Japan Tobacco offering. Japan's biggest brokerage, Nomura Holdings Inc (8604.T), was not selected as an underwriter after its involvement in an insider trading scandal.

The mandated banks invited other banks playing lesser roles in the sale at Tuesday's meeting, which was called to inform them of the planned schedule for the offering, the sources said.

Palestinian director held briefly at LA airport

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Immigration officials briefly detained the Palestinian director of the Oscar-nominated documentary "5 Broken Cameras" on his way into town for Sunday's Academy Awards.

Emad Burnat says that when he arrived at Los Angeles International Airport from Turkey with his wife and 8-year-old son late Tuesday, agents told them they didn't have the proper proof that he was a nominee and would send them back if they couldn't verify the reason for their visit. After about an hour of questioning, the agents allowed Burnat and his family to enter the country.

Burnat had just been in the United States two weeks earlier doing interviews about the film alongside his co-director, Israeli activist Guy Davidi, including some with The Associated Press.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a statement that it is prohibited from discussing specific cases, but noted that in general, "travelers may be referred for further inspection for a variety of reasons to include identity verification, intent of travel and confirmation of admissibility."

Oscar-winning documentarian Michael Moore, a friend of Burnat's and a champion of his work, wrote on his website, michaelmoore.com, that Burnat texted him from an airport holding area seeking help. Moore said he made a few calls to leaders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who contacted some attorneys to clear up the matter. The Academy did not respond to a request for comment on Burnat's detainment.

"5 Broken Cameras," the first Palestinian documentary ever nominated for an Oscar, already has won awards at the Sundance Film Festival and the Cinema Eye Honors. It features footage that the olive farmer-turned-filmmaker shot using five cameras in his occupied West Bank village of Bil'in, from everyday activities with his family to protests and shootings. The son with whom he is traveling, Gibreel, was the inspiration for buying the first of these cameras in 2005; like so many parents, Burnat wanted to document the boy's first steps and smiles.

But he also found himself wanting to capture the tension and fighting that are daily occurrences in the struggle for territory. In the film, his cameras keep getting destroyed in the violence.

Because of his experiences, Burnat said in a statement Wednesday, he's gotten used to the kind of questioning he and his family underwent at LAX.

"There are more than 500 Israeli checkpoints, roadblocks, and other barriers to movement across our land, and not a single one of us has been spared the experience that my family and I experienced yesterday," he said. "Ours was a very minor example of what my people face every day."

Opera confirms downsizing of developer team as it readies for newly adopted WebKit era

Opera's been making quite a few notable changes lately, and now we're finding out it won't be without any repercussions to some of its staff. Earlier today, Opera CEO Lars Boilsen's confirmed to our friends over at TechCrunch that the browser's developer team is indeed downsizing, confirming previous reports about the company having to make changes as part of its recently announced WebKit adoption. Just how many Core positions will be lost in the process is still unclear, however, with Mr. Boilsen only going as far as telling TechCrunch the number of developers working on the overall project is now at "around 600." What's more, Opera's CEO says it's all part of a belief that "WebKit's good enough, to switch, and by doing that we free up a lot of resources," adding that Opera "will still have a Core team but it will be less people going forward."

Threat of snow, rain in Southern California to lift by weekend

Southland residents will likely wake up Wednesday morning to snow-capped mountains at low elevations, but the sun is expected to break through by afternoon.

Dark skies and wind threatened Tuesday, with the heaviest rains and snow expected overnight, weather forecasters said.

Before the system moves out of the area, up to an inch of rain is expected to fall, along with occasional thunderstorms, hail and a heavy punch of snow coating the mountain areas.

A winter weather warning called for up to 6 inches of snow at elevations as low as 2,500 feet, with another 2 inches falling at the 5,000-foot level, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Brian Edwards.

Accumulating snow will most likely affect travel on major roadways into or through the mountains, including portions of Interstate 5 and portions of Highway 14 through the Soledad Pass between the Santa Clarita Valley and the Antelope Valley, officials say.

Snow is expected to fall so low on local mountains that the Ortega Highway in eastern Orange County - which crests at 2,600 feet just west of Lake Elsinore - has been added to a list of mountain passes that might be impacted, officials with the National Weather Service said.

North of Los Angeles, heavy snow and blizzard winds are expected along Interstate 5, which is above the 2,000-foot level for about 40 miles in the mountains north of Castaic.

Sixty-mph winds were forecast for the Grapevine, and isolated snow-thunderstorms

could develop and drop more than a foot of snow in some places, the NWS warned.

Public works and highway officials issued warnings to drivers and in some cases closed mountain roads, including: Big Tujunga Road between Vogel Flats Road and Angeles Forest Highway; the Angeles Forest from Aliso Canyon to the Angeles Crest Highway; and Upper Big Tujunga from Angeles Forest Highway to Angeles Crest Highway.

Icy road conditions prompted the call for chain restrictions on a fourth road in the forest, Mount Wilson Red Box Road from Video Road to Angeles Crest Highway, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works.

Battering winds along the Golden State (5) Freeway through the Grapevine prompted Caltrans to issue a warning to motorists in campers, recreational vehicles and large trucks.

Caltrans and L.A. County public works officials will continue to monitor the storm before lifting any warnings or putting any roads back in service, officials said Tuesday.

Along with the wet and windy conditions along the coast and in the inland valley areas, temperatures will have a chilly edge.

Temperatures dropped to the mid-40s along the coast Tuesday and were anchored in the upper 30s in the valleys, Edwards said.

Today's temperatures should reach about 68 degrees along the coast, but linger in the mid-50s inland.

Tonight, temperatures are expected to fall again below freezing, while the coast will be in the low 40s, Edwards said, adding that conditions will remain frigid Thursday and Friday before warming to moderate weather over the weekend.

India urging Bangladesh to curb illegal migration: Sonia Gandhi

Tuesday, February 19, 2013 (19:09:32)
Tags : Congress President, Sonia Gandhi, Bangladesh, Immigration
Jowai (Meghalaya), Feb 19: India has urged Bangladesh to take "concrete steps" to prevent its citizens from crossing across illegally into India, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said today. "We are aware that much still needs to be done and many issues (exist) such as those related to immigration. We are presently engaging with the Bangladesh government to stem illegal immigration (which is) of concern to you," she said addressing a party election rally here. "I am hopeful that we will reach a solution to the satisfaction of all sides," Gandhi said. Several social organizations in Meghalaya had demanded implementation of inner line permit (ILP) to restrict entry of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants to the state. Stressing that she was aware that illegal mining is a threat to the environment in mineral-rich Meghalaya, the Congress president said: "We have taken some measures and shall continue in our effort." Describing Meghalaya as one of the fastest growing states not only in the northeastern region, but in the country as a whole, Gandhi said: "This is a success, not just social or financial terms but also in administrative terms." Praising her party government, she said: "I can say with some measure of satisfaction that, under the current government, Meghalaya has witnessed a very productive and peaceful period in the history of the state. In many ways, Meghalaya has grown far more rapidly than most other states in the country." Noting that Meghalaya has ushered in an era of peace, prosperity and stability that is unique in the history of this mountainous state, Gandhi said: "This is a development of which everyone can be proud. This is growth in which everyone has a share." She said Meghalaya is home to a dynamic, talented and hard-working people but "more importantly, it is home to a very promising population of the young women and men who are capable of contributing significantly to the state's progress". Urging the people of Meghalaya to give a clear mandate to the Congress, Gandhi said that if Congress returns to power, its government would continue building new facilities and upgrading existing ones to ensure that no one is denied basic medical services. She also promised that the Congress government would also develop sporting facilities so that the abundance of sporting talent in the state is properly nurtured.(IANS)

What Did Prisoner X Know? Israel?s Mossad Was Scared Of Ben Zygier For A Reason

The 34-year-old father of two, who?also went by the aliases Ben Allen and Ben Burrowes,?was imprisoned in solitary confinement in 2010. Israeli outlet YNetNews first reported the existence of Prisoner X soon after his death that December, but the article was quickly taken down. Prisoner X?s arrest and jailing in the maximum-security Ayalon prison were the object of a media blackout for two years. There?s been no report that X was ever officially tried or convicted.

The investigation into X?s death ended two months ago when a judge ruled that he had committed suicide in his highly secure, supposedly suicide-proof cell, after 10 months of confinement. The judge also ordered additional investigations into whether the prison guards were ?derelict in their duty,? Australian outlet ABC News said.

The fact that anyone or anything mentioning this case is immediately hushed up suggested that the concerned material and person is ?very touchy and very immediate,? Warren Reed, a former Australian spy, said to Australian outlet ABC, which has investigated the case in depth. Another clue as to how seriously Israeli authorities treated X?s case: He was housed in a cell that had only one other occupant, the assassin of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

ABC learned that Zygier was one of three Australian Jews who ?changed their names several times, taking out new passports for travel in the Middle East and Europe in their work for the Mossad.? Just before being arrested, Zygier had applied for a work visa in Italy. ABC also reported that Zygier had previously set up a company for the Mossad in Europe selling electronics to Arab countries and Iran.

ABC reported that during one of his visits to his home in Australia, Zygier either contacted or was contacted by the Australian intelligence agency, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation.?

The New York Times revealed that at the time of his arrest, Zygier was already being investigated by Australia for spying for Israel and had used his Australian passport to travel to Iran, Syria and Lebanon in order to carry out Mossad operations. He had been working for the Mossad for a decade when the Israelis arrested him.

The Mossad discovered Zygier?s contact with ASIO and may have been worried that he might become a double agent. There was ?a major Mossad operation planned for Italy? that the Israeli intelligence service may have been concerned about. Other sources told ABC that Zygier may have told the ASIO ?every aspect of his work with the Israelis.?

Relations between Israel and Australia soured in early 2010 after the Mossad co-opted the identities of four dual Israeli-Australian citizens, among other dual citizens, to carry out the assassination in Dubai of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, an arms trader for Hamas. Australia and England placed economic sanctions on Israel after al-Mabhouh?s death.

On Thursday, the New York Times?linked Zygier to that assassination and quoted Australian sources, who said that Zygier was arrested by Israeli authorities just before he was about to disclose to the Australian government?information about the passports that were used in the operation.

The Sydney Morning Herald quoted an anonymous Australian official as saying, ?Zygier may well have been about to blow the whistle, but he never got the chance.?

Initial requests from ABC to the Australian government resulted in letters confirming that documents regarding Prisoner X existed, but the government said their disclosure would ?have a substantial adverse impact on the proper and efficient conduct of ... consular operations.?

Israel only acknowledged the case of Prisoner X last week, after ABC?s investigative story on him.

Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr is expected to launch his own investigation, ABC said.

Zygier hailed from suburban Melbourne and is buried in a Melbourne cemetery.

Bundesbank: German economy to avoid recession

FRANKFURT (AP) ? German's central bank says the country's economy is on track to avoid a recession as it shows signs of growth in the first three months of the year.

Europe's largest economy shrank 0.6 percent in the last quarter of 2012. Two straight quarters of falling output is a common definition of recession.

The Bundesbank says in its monthly report out Monday that increasing business optimism and easing fears about the government debt crisis among the 17 European Union euro countries mean business may become more willing to invest and expand. That means that "a plus in total economic production can be expected for the first quarter of 2013."

A growing German economy could help speed the eurozone's recovery, which is mired in recession. Governments are cutting spending and raising taxes to reduce heavy levels of debt, slowing their economies. Greece, Portugal and Ireland have needed bailout loans from the other eurozone members, while Spain and Italy are in recessions with high unemployment.

The European Central Bank says the eurozone will shrink 0.3 percent in 2013 and only start to recover later in the year. Growth is key for solving the debt crisis, since it shrinks the size of country's debts relative to their economy and increases revenue from income and business taxes.

German growth helps the other countries in the eurozone because German consumers purchase imports from them, and because German companies use firms in neighboring countries as suppliers.

  • State announces snake hunt winners
  • State offered prizes up to $1,500 for the most Burmese pythons harvested
  • Florida estimates up to 100,000 pythons live in the Everglades

(CNN) -- They can reach lengths of 18 feet and their numbers are estimated to be in the tens of thousands, but Burmese pythons, a nuisance in the Everglades, aren't easy to find.

"It's an amazing challenge to try to come out and hunt these big snakes," hunter Dennis Jordan told CNN Miami affiliate WSVN in the closing days of the 2013 Python Challenge sponsored by state officials.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission announced Saturday that 68 Burmese pythons were killed during the January 12-February 10 competition that drew 1,600 registrants lured by prizes of up to $1,500.

Though the take was small, wildlife officials said their main aim was heightening public awareness of the invasive species.

"Thanks to the determination of Python Challenge competitors, we are able to gather invaluable information that will help refine and focus combined efforts to control pythons in the Everglades," commission executive director Nick Wiley said.

State wildlife officials say there may be as many as 100,000 Burmese pythons living in the vast swamps outside Miami. By comparison, the state is home to about 1.3 million alligators.

"You can go out there for days and days and days and not see one python," snake hunter Justin Matthews said last month. "I don't care how much experience you have. It is going to take some luck."

Hunters covered a million acres of swamp and sawgrass, officials said.

Scientists examine record python found in Florida

The pythons began turning up in the Everglades in 1979, most likely abandoned by pet owners when the snakes got too big to handle. They have no natural predators.

Rabbits and foxes have disappeared, while raccoon, opossum and bobcat populations have dropped as much as 99%, researchers at Virginia Tech University, Davidson College and the U.S. Geological Survey reported in 2012. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has banned the importation of Burmese pythons, along with three other exotic snake species and their eggs.

While the pythons can run to double-digit lengths, University of Florida wildlife ecologist Frank Mazzotti said the average snake runs about 6 to 9 feet.

State officials recommended shooting the snakes in the head or decapitating them with a machete.

Hunter Brian Barrows of Fort Myers won a $1,500 grand prize in the amateur category for harvesting six pythons, as did Ruben Ramirez of Miami, who bagged 18 of the creatures in the competition for professional hunters.

Paul Shannon of Lehigh Acres won $1,000 for the longest python, which stretched 14 feet, 3 inches.

How life on run ended for California police killer

BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. (AP) ? As soon as he heard officers were chasing the suspected cop killer in a stolen truck, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputy Roger Loftis was certain: His buddy Jeremiah MacKay would be there.

In 15 years with the department, "Jer" had earned about a dozen and a half awards for 10851s ? the California penal code for grand theft auto. Once, while heading to a bar to celebrate another award, MacKay noticed there were no keys in the ignition of the car next to him at a traffic light, and he veered off.

He waltzed into the bar two hours later, a grin stretched across that fair, freckled face, a copy of an auto recovery record in his hand.

Last week, Loftis called his fishing, drinking and golfing buddy to see how he was doing. He knew the 35-year-old detective had been working around the clock, scouring the San Bernardino Mountains in the search for former Los Angeles Police Officer Christopher Dorner.

"If that guy's still on this mountain," MacKay told him, "I'm going to find him."

When the announcer reported that two deputies had exchanged fire with the suspect, Loftis got a sick feeling in his stomach. The 54-year-old corrections officer sent his friend a text.

"I know you're busy," he typed. "But let me know you're OK. ASAP."

There was no answer.

About an hour later, a colleague called with the news: MacKay, husband and father of two, was dead. Soon, so would be his killer.

Like the Unabomber and other mass killers, the 33-year-old former cop wrote a "manifesto." And, like so many others, Dorner's perceptions of the world and its supposed injustices against him seem out of sync with reality.

Why now?

Was it the supposed institutional racism that cost him his LAPD badge? That was four years ago.

Was it, as he once suggested, residual trauma from his military service in the Middle East? Records show a relatively benign tour of duty, well outside the war zone.

One marriage fell apart; a second went no further than the license application. This, too, he seemed to blame on others ? anyone but himself.

"I never had the opportunity to have a family of my own," he wrote to his targets. "I'm terminating yours."

Even his boasts of paramilitary prowess and promise to "bring unconventional and asymmetrical warfare" to southern California evaporated in a cavalcade of broken-down vehicles, failed hijackings and a botched hog-tying. His weeklong stint as America's most wanted fugitive ended in a shootout with police, and then what officials said was a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.

___

At 6 feet and 270 pounds, Christopher Jordan Dorner looked every inch the college football player he once was.

Melinda Yates befriended Dorner when they attended Southern Utah University together in Cedar City, a small town northeast of Las Vegas. She remembers him as "kind of like a big teddy bear," always smiling.

Apparently, behind that sweet smile there was rage.

Dorner claimed his earliest experience with racism was in first grade at a Christian school, when he punched and kicked a fellow student who'd called him a "nigger" on the playground. The principal "swatted" the other boy for the slur, then struck Dorner for failing to "turn the other cheek as Jesus did."

"That day," he would write in the now infamous manifesto, "I made a life decision that i will not tolerate racial derogatory terms spoken to me."

Dorner joined the Navy in July 2002. He told a reporter that he wanted to fly SH-60/MH-60 Seahawk helicopters on special operations and search-and-rescue missions ? but later told an acquaintance that a problem with vertigo killed those dreams.

So he went into the Navy Reserve doing mostly administrative work after his active-duty stint ended in June 2004.

Soon afterward, he shifted his sights to the LAPD.

He entered the academy on Feb. 7, 2005.

Like the other cadets, Dorner went through the department's rigorous six-month, 920-hour academy training. Upon completion, he joined a training officer on the street, working regular 12-hour shifts. There was at least one bump in the road: He was suspended for two days for accidental discharge of his firearm.

A year after Dorner became a police officer, he rose to the rank of lieutenant in the Navy on Aug. 1, 2006 ? his last promotion.

He was called up in the Reserve and left on a six-month deployment to Bahrain on Nov. 3, 2006. He worked mostly providing port protection, earning an Iraq Campaign Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Dorner returned to the LAPD in 2007 and resumed his training. That is when his career ? and life ? went off the rails.

Sgt. Teresa Evans, his training officer, said Dorner repeatedly asked why he was being put back on patrol without reintegration training. On one occasion, she said, he began weeping in the patrol car and demanded to go back to the academy.

Dorner told Evans that he "might have some issues regarding his deployment," she told investigators.

A day after Evans submitted a poor review, Dorner told internal affairs that she had kicked a mentally ill man in the chest and left cheek during an arrest. He was relieved of duty on Sept. 4, 2008.

A police review panel ultimately found the allegation untrue. He was officially fired on Jan. 2, 2009.

There were already hints of a troubled personal life; Dorner married April Carter in April 2007 and bought a home a few miles from the Las Vegas Strip. Less than a month later, the couple filed for a divorce.

(More than five years later, on Oct. 19 of last year, Las Vegas records show that he and Ali Kristine McDonald obtained a marriage license. But there is no indication they actually married.)

Months after he was fired, Dorner filed a writ in Los Angeles Superior Court against the LAPD, alleging wrongful termination. He continued filing appeals in different courts up until 2011.

But why Dorner unleashed his revenge now is unclear. Former roommate J'Anna Viskoc has a theory.

For about two months in the summer of 2008, the Las Vegas manicurist rented a room in Dorner's home. Aside from all the guns ? which were "on the floor, under the cushions" ? she remembers the uniformed portraits and framed displays of his medals.

"I feel like being a police officer and being in the military, that was his identity," she said. "That was who he was."

On Feb. 1, Dorner received an honorable discharge, ending his lackluster 11-year Navy career.

"Maybe that's what set him off," Viskoc wondered. "That he couldn't win."

___

Dorner claimed his first victims on Feb. 3.

Monica Quan, 28, was an assistant women's basketball coach at California State University, Fullerton. She was also the daughter of retired LAPD Capt. Randal Quan ? the man who had represented Dorner in his disciplinary hearings.

She lived in an Irvine condominium with boyfriend Keith Lawrence ? a former basketball player and University of Southern California cop whose shoes and buckles she had stayed up until the wee hours polishing when he was at the police academy. On Jan. 26, Lawrence, 27, had strewn the apartment floor with rose petals, gotten down on one knee and proposed, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Just over a week later, at 9:10 p.m., Quan and Lawrence were found slumped in their car in the parking lot of their condo complex. They were fatally shot.

The next morning, an employee emptying the trash behind a San Diego-area auto parts store spotted some military gear in a trash bin. Around that same time, Dorner posted his 11,000-word screed entitled "Last Resort" on Facebook.

"This was a necessary evil that had to be executed in order for me to obtain my NAME back," Dorner wrote. "The only thing that changes policy and garners attention is death."

The rambling post went on: "When the truth comes out, the killing stops."

The document would lurk in cyberspace for two more days before police discovered it and connected it to the Irvine killings. They held a news conference to name Dorner as a suspect.

The next day, Feb. 7, Dorner struck again.

Around 1:30 a.m. two LAPD officers assigned to protect one of the people named in Dorner's manifesto spotted him in the Riverside County community of Corona. During a shootout, one officer was grazed on the forehead.

A short while later in nearby Riverside, SWAT team Officer Michael Crain and trainee Andrew Tachias were in the middle of a graveyard shift.

The 34-year-old former Marine had served two tours of duty in Kuwait before joining the Riverside force in 2001. As a Marine, Crain had once taught urban warfare tactics, but on this day he had no time to react.

The two were waiting at a stoplight when someone ? believed to be Dorner ? raced up and opened fire on them. Tachias, 27, was critically wounded; Crain was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Before dawn, freeway signs lit up statewide with a description of Dorner and his pickup, and a warning that he should be considered armed and extremely dangerous.

Later that morning, authorities found a burned-out pickup truck near the Bear Mountain ski area in the San Bernardino Mountains. The truck, which had a broken axle, was loaded with weapons and camping gear.

Police later confirmed it was the black Nissan Titan Dorner had so religiously buffed and polished.

Tips poured in, topping 1,000 after a $1 million reward was posted on Feb. 9. The Mexican navy went on alert following a report that Dorner had attempted to steal a yacht in San Diego.

Other suspected sightings of Dorner over the week led to authorities mistakenly firing on two newspaper carriers, shutting down a Navy base in San Diego, evacuating a Los Angeles area home improvement store, and raiding at a low-budget motel across the border in Tijuana, Mexico. But the manhunt was centered on the mountains. That was Jeremiah MacKay's territory.

___

MacKay's father, Alan, is something of a legend in these hills.

A former captain with the San Bernardino County Fire Department, the elder MacKay had played a key role during the 2003 "Old Fire," which burned more than 91,000 acres, killed five people and destroyed more than 1,000 homes. The Redlands resident put in 15-hour days, fighting the fire and acting as a department spokesman when needed.

Loftis says the son had initially planned to follow in the father's footsteps. But a few ride-alongs with deputies patrolling the waters of Lake Arrowhead convinced him to go for another type of badge.

The younger MacKay had been putting in 12-hour days searching for Dorner. On Feb. 9, an Associated Press reporter ran across him during a patrol around the lake.

Despite having been on duty since 5 a.m., MacKay and his partner were in good spirits. Standing by the car door in full tactical gear, MacKay tucked the stock of his Mini-14 rifle against his shoulder and practiced sighting down the barrel, aiming playfully at a snowdrift.

"This one, you just never know if the guy's going to pop out or where he's going to pop out," he told a reporter, crinkling his brow and shaking his head. "We're hoping this comes to a close without any more casualties. The best thing would be for him to give up."

The next day, MacKay was excited to see his photo on the front page of the Los Angeles Times. But he chided himself, cousin Kelly Mitchell says, for having what he considered "a smug look" on his face.

Jeremiah and Lynette MacKay married in late 2011. Lynette had a 7-year-old daughter from a previous relationship; about four months ago, she gave birth to a son.

As a bagpiper for the Inland Empire Emerald Society, MacKay had played at many memorials and funerals for fallen officers. He knew this hunt was perilous, but he knew just as well that Dorner had to be stopped.

And he was determined to be the one who did it.

___

Jim and Karen Reynolds were in the process of refurbishing their condo near Big Bear, working on it off and on through the winter season. They had last been there on Feb. 6 and weren't planning to come back until Valentine's Day, but decided to check in early after learning that Dorner's truck had been abandoned nearby.

When they walked into the upstairs living room Tuesday morning, Dorner was waiting for them with his gun drawn. He had been there at least five days ? within shouting distance of a command post set up by the people hunting him.

"Stay calm," he shouted. When Karen Reynolds turned to run out, he grabbed her from behind.

Karen Reynolds said Dorner was calm and "very methodical" as he instructed them to sit, then tied their hands and legs.

"I don't have a problem with you," he told the couple. "I just want to clear my name."

Dorner moved the couple to a bedroom and shut the door.

When they felt he had gone, Karen Reynolds managed to get to her feet and, with her hands still tied behind her back, open the door. To her amazement, Dorner had left her cell phone on the living room table.

She picked it up and dialed 911. It was 12:22 p.m. Tuesday.

Dorner had taken off in the couple's purple Nissan SUV. It wasn't long before officers, now alerted, spotted the fugitive.

Dorner managed to evade a group of wardens from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and some sheriff's deputies. But he later crashed the Nissan and struck out on foot.

Rick Heltebrake was driving the perimeter of a Boy Scout camp he watches over when Dorner ? his bulletproof vest bristling with rifle magazines ? emerged from the tree line.

"I don't want to hurt you," Dorner said in a calm, businesslike voice as he pointed his rifle at the 51-year-old Heltebrake. "Start walking and take your dog."

Heltebrake sensed that Dorner, who stole his truck, was on a mission, and that he wasn't part of the agenda. Suni took his 3-year-old Dalmatian and walked away.

Heltebrake had just called police when he heard gunfire.

___

When he left the house that morning, MacKay told his wife that he'd never been happier, Mitchell, his cousin, said. He called her the love of his life.

Hours later, he was on the trail of the stolen pickup.

The fugitive raced 25 miles down the mountain as officers converged. MacKay and his partner, Alex Collins, responded.

Not far up the road from where Dorner had left Heltebrake, some game wardens spotted the white truck speeding erratically. Dorner opened the window and fired.

According to sheriff's department officials, MacKay and his partner followed where they believed the truck had gone. They were unaware that Dorner had crashed it. They spotted tracks in the snow leading to a cabin and got out of their cruiser.

The pair stopped about 30 yards from the cabin to devise a plan when shots were fired. Neither deputy had a chance to return fire. Both were hit multiple times. A doctor told Loftis death for MacKay came instantly or in "just seconds."

Collins survived but has undergone multiple surgeries. A SWAT team arrived quickly and laid down covering fire to allow the officers to be airlifted.

Dorner set off some smoke grenades and prepared to make his last stand. His end game would play out on live television.

Officers from across the region converged on the cabin, cutting off all escape. Four hours after the chase Tuesday, police launched tear gas through the windows.

Around 4:45 p.m., flames and smoke began billowing from the house. Officers then heard the single gunshot from inside.

The manhunt was over.

___

In the end, Dorner fell blessedly short of his stated goals.

Despite declaring war on "those in LAPD uniform whether on or off duty," the only victim with a direct link to the department was Monica Quan. And it is more than a little ironic that a man lashing out against racial injustice should murder the daughter of the LAPD's first Chinese-American captain.

A joint memorial service for Quan and Lawrence is planned for Feb. 24 at Irvine's Concordia University, where they met. Lawrence ? at the request of his father ? will be buried in his public safety officer's uniform, said his training supervisor Capt. David Carlisle.

The service had been on hold while Quarn's father was in custody to protect him from Dorner's rampage.

On Wednesday, Crain ? the father who loved attending his 4-year-old daughter's dance recitals and coaching his son's baseball team ? was buried with full honors. His 10-year-old son, Ian, joined officers carrying his father's casket out of the church to the mournful drone of bagpipes.

MacKay's funeral is scheduled Thursday at San Bernardino's San Manuel Amphitheater. The Los Angeles Police Emerald Society Pipes and Drums, with whom he'd often played, will be there to send him off.

Loftis is having trouble imagining life without his friend. Coming to grips with the depth of Dorner's betrayal is even harder.

"He got the best of us. He took one of the best that we have," he said ruefully. "He lost a job because he didn't deserve it, and he takes these officers' lives, really, for nothing. It was stupid and senseless."
