Exclusive analysis: Why Vettel's pass was legal - F1 news - Autosport

Sebastian Vettel, Red BullFormula 1 fans, the media and Ferrari themselves have pored over YouTube clips from the Brazilian Grand Prix that appeared to show Sebastian Vettel overtaking Jean-Eric Verge before the end of a yellow flag zone on lap four.

Yet although this short video was enough to prompt Ferrari to ask for clarification about the matter, detailed analysis of the incident by high level sources shows that the Red Bull driver was entirely within the regulations - and that there are no grounds for further investigation.

An FIA spokesman confirmed to AUTOSPORT that during the race itself there had been no report from a marshal about any overtaking under yellow flags, as would most likely have happened if a breach of the regulations had taken place.

Furthermore, an in-depth look of the warning lights and marshal's post set-up at the Interlagos circuit showed that Vettel's pass took place after he had passed a green flag.

Although the 'yellow' sector itself starts at a light panel just before Turn 3, and ends about 150m before Turn 4, the light panels are a supplement to the traditional flags and are rarely in the same location.

With the use of lights, due to increased visibility, the track can be divided up into fewer sectors as line-of-sight is not always needed between them. At Interlagos, there were 22 marshals' posts while the FIA installed 16 light panels, which means there was overlap in places. The warning lights are also linked to the display in the cockpit.

According to high level FIA sources, the light panel that was showing yellow for Pastor Maldonado's stricken Williams was shown 100 metres before the next marshal post, which was located near the exit of the pitlane.

At this marshal's post a green flag was being waved on lap four - at the same time as the light signal at Turn Four was displaying green.

The separation of these two posts was about 350 metres and FIA race director Charlie Whiting has made it clear to drivers since lights were introduced more than five years ago that when there are consecutive signals from both a flag and a light, it is the first one that counts.

Vettel had to charge back through the tail-endersSo if, for example, a yellow flag is displayed followed later by a yellow light, then the no overtaking area begins at the first yellow signal which would be the flag.

So, as happened in the Vettel case, if a driver is given a green warning flag followed by a green warning light, it is the first green that counts.

Vettel's pass took place after the first green flag but before the green light, so was wholly legitimate.

This was why race control was not informed of any potential infringement and the matter was never subject to a post-race inquiry by the stewards.

Disney Reportedly Taking a Marvel-Type Approach to Star Wars

George Lucas and Lawrence Kasdan

This story first appeared in the Dec. 7 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

The post-George Lucas Star Wars universe slowly is taking shape. Soon after it was announced Oct. 30 that Disney would acquire Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion, it was revealed that Oscar winner Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine) had written a 40- to 50-page treatment for the new trilogy and would be writing the script for Star Wars: Episode VII.

Then reports emerged the week of Nov. 19 that The Empire Strikes Back?s Lawrence Kasdan (CAA, Greenberg Glusker) and Sherlock Holmes? Simon Kinberg (CAA, Jackoway Tyerman) would be writing and producing Episode VIII and Episode IX, even as Disney and Lucasfilm refused to confirm their top-secret plans.

But now insiders tell THR that while Kasdan and Kinberg indeed have been hired to work on the Star Wars franchise, they will be writing separate projects (hence the reason why they also would receive producer credits), not necessarily Episode VIII and Episode IX.

STORY: Lawrence Kasdan, Simon Kinberg Lock Deals to Write and Produce 'Star Wars' Installments

Their scripts could turn into official ?Episodes? in the main Skywalker storyline, or they could form the basis for spinoffs focusing on side characters. Disney CEO Robert Iger said the goal is to release a Star Wars movie ?every two to three years,? and some could focus on other pieces of the expansive mythos (similar to Marvel?s Avengers universe). Disney and Lucasfilm declined comment.

Gold Bug Hitting Japan - Chicago Gold and Silver Investing Fan Blog

There is mounting evidence that the gold bug is hitting Japan. According to Profit Confidential :

"I don?t believe it is a coincidence that, ever since the Japanese government reported a budget deficit, the Japanese consumer increased their buying of gold bullion to be at a 15% greater pace than last year (source: Market Watch). That is, the Japanese consumer bought 15% more gold bullion in 2011 than 2010. Thus far in 2012, this trend has shown no signs of slowing down."

The biggest Gold players in Asia are India and China. Smaller countries like the Phillipines and Vietnam are increasing their holdings. Add Japan to the mix and you got the makings of a gold buying frenzy in Asia.

Could it be that these countries central banks are buying gold to diversify their assets in the event of some kind of currency collapse? Could it be that citizens of these countries are waking up to the realities of this world that its citizens are worried about faith in their currency?

Gabriel Aubry Arrested After Alleged Beat-Down (PHOTOS)

This one is about as ugly as the post-fight pictures. According to reports, Gabriel Aubry claims he was beaten severely by Halle Berry?s fianc?, and on top of it all, he ended up being arrested. The photos are bad. One of his eyes looks like it is completely swollen shut, and he has a few obvious gashes on the other side. It?s bad. So how did it happen? Well, this is a little confusing. There is obviously shared custody of their daughter between Halle and Aubry. Apparently things have gotten a little tense between Aubry and the new guy in the relationship. Aubry says he whispered some threatening things in a public place prior to the actual fight, something about wanting to kick his ass. The fight supposedly took place when Aubry went to drop his daughter off to Halle. He says that Berry?s fianc?, Olivier Martinez, accosted him. When he tried to walk away, he claims he was pushed down to the ground, then beaten. Get the rest of the story over at RadarOnline. Match the celeb to the tattoo over at Stupid Celebrity. ?Oreshura? Can Cause Skin Cancer | SeventhStyle

If you want to watch Oreshura?s first PV, put your sunglasses on and get ready ? the entire clip burns with the intensity of a thousand suns, and at most, one will be able to catch glimpses of each character?s eyes.

Knowing there?s no hope of improving the story, and as there?s no helping A-1 Pictures when it comes to aesthetic, it?s as if the production staff sat at the meeting table in silence till one of them slammed the table and yelled ?I?ve got it!?. The solution to the lack of creativity in this far from extraordinary series is not to adjust the plot, visuals, or sound with a meaningful descrepancy ? let?s just turn the brightness up beyond 110%.

Unfortunately, this master plan is not very effective. It makes the PV unbearable ? blurred video playing with characters indistinguishable from the backgrounds, and all the while, leaving the viewer at risk of acquiring skin cancer.

This saturated artwork is excessive to the point the impact of expressed sentiments is weakened. The visual sensory element is subdued heavily ? and this also, as result, dwindles the impact of other sensory realms, such as sound. The music fails to captivate if we?re hardly even able to see the characters as the sensory elements are interdependent in an animation.

On the positive side, this will be the first catastrophe caused by such absurd levels of brightness ? a disaster definitely going down in the history books. Perhaps the Blu-rays will sell to researchers wishing to study how such failure is possible and how it can be prevented.

Opportunities for business angels and startup entrepreneurs ...

The period of huge new global internet brands succeeding may be drawing to an end, so could it ?be B2B and outsourced internet companies that make up growth for the next few years and provide opportunities for?business?angels and startup?entrepreneurs?

Nic Brisbourne, a London tech VC, has recently written about the increased risk in large scale consumer driven internet startup companies. He quotes Fred Wilson who says that the large?incumbent?companies (Amazon, Google, Facebook, Twitter etc) are ?starting to suck up a lot of the oxygen? making it ?harder than ever to build a large audience from a standing start?.

Brisbourne advises startup companies that they may be better off to find smaller consumer niches ? where the monetisation of the product takes place much earlier ? or in business to business services.

Which means that we want to take a look at the business to business outsourced market to see what opportunities lie ahead.

In the early days of outsourcing in the 1980s, this often meant taking a large technical (or software) project overseas ? typically to India but also now eastern Europe, Russia or the?Philippines.

In fact, India expects its revenue from projects outsourced to its shores to pass the US$100m mark this year. ?Benedict Hernandez, the head of the Business Processing Association of the Philippines, recently appeared on the BBC quoting that he was confident of a growth of business outsourcing continuing for many years, despite slower global growth.

The software outsourcing market is both huge and ultra competitive. Therefore, it can move to new low cost locations and incumbent companies will work hard to win business ? slashing margins if necessary.

However, within software outsourcing, the ability to bring a specialist niche of developers at an attractive price with sufficient quality control is key. This then becomes a mix of the ability to make the best of new communications technology ? document and project sharing to free conferencing on skype etc? as well as the ability to pull teams together and lead them. Business Angels and entrepreneurs are getting a lot of success in this sector, but the challenge remains on how to leverage growth without leveraging your costs.

The nature of outsourcing has changed?

In the early days, it was the software project that was outsourced, now-a-days, it is more likely that it is a service ? accounting, legal or knowledge based service that is outsourced.

It is simply that technology has become the facilitator of the outsourcing rather than the object.

Specialist niches in outsourcing

A perfect example of this is document translation services. ?The ability of an agency or service provider to manage many highly specialised language specialists is a perfect example of why outsourcing makes sense. Despite the fact that most successful companies now trade in 100s of countries, it doesn?t really make sense for that company to employ 100s of language specialists.

Another niche area is typically in the area of specialist software knowledge. And, the more a company is set on a specialist set of software ? such as Ruby on Rails ? then the greater its need for specialists.

As those specialists are more expensive (as there are fewer of them) then the company will typically outsource more of its work.

Typically, outsourcing companies do best when there is a regular need for a short piece of work. I recall a very successful
City of London based printer who won all the work for printing company reports. Despite the collapse of the printing industry, this little business flourished because it was very close to its market and able to deliver excellent customer service (often printing reports within 24 hours) at relatively small print runs.

Employment law as an opportunity driver

Another factor driving outsourcing is employment law. In developed western nations employment law is both complex and expensive to both implement and maintain. By outsourcing, the company can significantly reduce its future liabilities.

You only have to look at the number of FTSE100 or Dow Jones companies whose company pension scheme is under water to understand why these companies need to tackle this issue.

Content Generation

One area that I believe is seeing significant growth is the outsourcing of content generation. In the past 10 years, manufacturers and service originators have shifted from paying to advertise in someone else?s media publication to building their own website, report or running a twitter feed ? all of which requires customised content.

This shift is set to increase with more companies looking to generate unique content that can carry their brand?messages?through sharing and online word of mouth.

Equally, most content generation will remain close to its market because the factor that what makes content valuable is it cultural fit and that can only be tackled by specialists who live and work in that culture.

So?

Business angels and startup entrepreneurs would do well to find a niche, be that in outsourced services or software generation or content generation.

And whilst the opportunity to be the next ?facebook? may have passed, there are plenty of successful multi-million pound businesses that are exploiting the technological changes and social changes driven by the internet.

?

Professional Reflections: A Service Delivery Issue I feel Strongly About

An issue I feel strongly about is using scores from standardized tests to determine (assess) an individual?s speech and language abilities. I learned about what validity and reliability mean in reference to using standardized testing tools early in my educational course work for this field. What is bothersome to me is that while it is common knowledge that most if not all exams, especially those for children, are not ?normed? on children I would test, many agencies and supervisors demand a score as part of an evaluation report.

Children I would test are those that live in New York City and the New York region (i.e., Long Island, Yonkers, Westchester). Further exasperating this topic are those children which are exposed to more than one language. These children do not follow the ?typical? speech and language developmental norms of any monolingual community. Therefore, why are SLPs using these testing tools to make an assessment? Some may think the SLP is monolingual and may not be aware. Let?s make it clear, there is no SLP that should graduate from any program, bilingual or not, that is not aware of reading a testing manual at the least. We are also taught, even if briefly, that testing tools should be scanned to remove or adjust bias questions/materials and that bilingual children should be tested by bilingual SLPs. Let me make another point clear: while a person is bilingual it does not qualify them to assess a bilingual person. For example, I am proficiently bilingual in English and Spanish. ??

What is especially worrisome is that while this is such a touchy subject, a certified SLP can actually lose their license over this issue/topic (using a score to report findings). I would venture and guess that one or two malefactions would not substantiate a license being revoked, however it baffles me as to how not more of an emphasis is made on using appropriate testing materials and informed clinical opinions to report findings instead of using scores from a test. In New York City there are rarely any children that would meet the reliability, validity, and norming standards for any test that I know of, yet I find that too often they are used to assess the child?s language abilities.

Catherine J. Crowley is not only the director of the Bilingual Institute at Teachers College, Columbia University but she is an advocate for this issue. In reality, I cannot say she is an advocate she is the leader who identifies what issues need to change and how to go about changing them. Last year when I started at the institute she informed us of some upcoming trainings and reforms regarding this precise topic: agencies forcing their employees to use scores to report a disorder/delay. Cate, as she likes to be addressed by her students, is still conducting trainings around the city to various agencies and changing policies as we speak. She has a lot of support, some of which is through her students and staff. Cate posts information on the institution?s Facebook page such as rallies, petitions, current events, etc. This is a person that I would reach out to about this issue and support for continuing to proctor this change.?

Cuteness streams from Kansas Humane Society's Kitty Cam ...

Add the Kansas Humane Society?s new ?Kitty Cam? to the list of 6,719,332 things to distract you when you?re supposed to be working.

(Note to editor: I was doing research!)

The kitty cam made its online debut Nov. 1, featuring the newest and fluffiest reality show stars.

The cam is a first for the shelter, which adopts out dogs, cats and small animals such as bunnies, gerbils and hamsters.

?We actually had a donor come in who was really interested in the idea,? said Melissa Houston, a communications specialist for the shelter.

The cam is on 24/7 on the shelter?s website at www.kshumane.org/kittycam.htm.

?At night, it goes into night vision mode. You can still see the cats playing around and everything,? Houston said.

Viewers can take turns being in control of the camera for two minutes at a time and can view for up to four or five minutes.

The camera is in the corner of the shelter?s ?kitty city,? just inside the shelter and across from the front desk. The camera also captures the lobby and reception area, the small animals and a few of the dog adoption areas.

Houston said Wednesday that the kitty cam had enjoyed 6,900 views from people who watched for at least 90 seconds.

Greg Fox of Realty World bought the equipment and is paying for online hosting of the kitty cam.

His daughter, he said, is a ?big cat and dog lover.?

About two years ago, the community involvement committee of the Wichita Area Association of Realtors, of which Fox is a former chairman, became involved with Woofstock, one of the shelter?s major annual fundraisers.

Fox had wanted to do something for the shelter, and he admits it helps give his business exposure.

Fox said he pays a hosting fee for the kitty cam and spent about $1,500 for the camera itself and $300 to $400 to have it installed.

?We have such an absolutely beautiful humane society to show off,? he said.

Paxatore | Many Characters Wanted!

>> Setting & Information <<

After the Protest of 2056, demanding equal rights for everyone, government fell completely, leaving no one to rule the country. For years, the country was war-torn, with no rules to guide anyone. People were dying all the time, of starvation, murder and suicide. People soon realized how much they missed rules, but there was nothing they could do about it.

The Rising of Baxter, as it is called, in 2098, was when Charlie Baxter II, after a few protests and a lot of great speeches, was elected as President. He renamed the country that used to be the United States of America to Paxatore, saying that their dreadful history would never be repeated. For this to happen, they needed a set list of rules, one that everyone would abide by, or suffer the consequences. With the new government came a lot of changes, including the removal of people's right to vote for the ruler, and the biggest change, the scientific break-through known as Purus Humans.

Purus Humans, are people who have either broken the law severely or have volunteered to be cleansed, or purified. This means that all their memories are wiped, excluding the basics. Their brains are completely rewired to be the perfect servants for other humans, and if you can pay enough, they can be specifically rewired to your particular needs. Purus humans, if there is a lack of criminals or volunteers, are sometimes just innocent people the government steals off the street, though the country of Paxatore has yet to learn this.

It is now 2287AD, and David Baxter, Charles grand-son, now rules Paxatore. This roleplay will be set in the third largest city in Paxatore, which is called Sectates. It is quite big, as you can imagine, which though it means a lot more security is around and a lot more monitored than some others, it also means it is too big for the security to be everywhere, meaning that a few areas will not always be guarded, though people rarely test these boundaries as the guards switch where they are situated every few hours and there are few areas that escape their watch.

>> Plot <<

There won't be one main plot to this roleplay, and this will be a very sandbox type roleplay, with no set way for the plot to go. There will be a starting ground but that is it, and we will see where the plot develops from there. Some of the Purus are starting to become faulty, meaning that they are developing thoughts outside those of their masters wishes, and slowly remembering their past. If this is found out by the government, they will either be purified yet again, or if this doesn't work executed. At the beginning of the roleplay the families will not yet know this, it is up to the players of the Purus to decide whether they will tell anyone.

The Characters Wanted Are As Follows:
-- The Cherren Family --
Father: RESERVED [Could Possibly be NPC, works as security at The Chains.]
Mother: OPEN [Could Possibly be NPC, part-time waitress at a fancy local restaurant called Bia.]
Eldest Brother: OPEN [Aged Nineteen, Male, In a relationship with eldest Everly sister.]
Youngest Sister: OPEN [Aged Sixteen, Female, best friends with eldest Everly brother.]
-- Home -;;- House --
PURUS: The Innocent One

-- The Swefield Family --
Mother: OPEN [Could Possibly be NPC, works as a shopkeeper at CEES&MON.]
Twin One: OPEN [Aged Fourteen, Male, sympathetic towards Purus Humans.]
Twin Two: TAKEN [Aged Fourteen, Female, Worried about Twin One's thoughts on Purus.]
-- Home -;;- Apartment --
PURUS: The Volunteer

-- The Everly Family --
Father: OPEN [Could Possibly be NPC, works as an accountant.]
Eldest Sister: OPEN [Aged Eighteen, Female, In a relationship with eldest Cherren brother.]
Eldest Brother: OPEN [Aged Seventeen, Male, Has a crush on youngest Cherren sister.]
-- Home -;;- House. --
PURUS: The Criminal

NOTE
The Everly and Swefield family are related, their parents are divorced but the twins live with the mother and older siblings live with the father. They visit often, at least once a week.

All of the Purus have the same room, which look like this.

-- Faulty Purus Humans --
The Criminal: RESERVED [Male, Aged (Above 18), was arrested after trying to start a mob to overthrow the government and stop the purifying of humans, and beating up and eventually killing a guard that attempted to stop him.]

The Innocent One: RESERVED [Female, Aged Fifteen, was taken off the street after a shortage of Purus.]

The Volunteer: TAKEN [Female, Aged Fifteen, volunteered after their mother passed away and was left at home with abusive father, thought of committing suicide but decided to become a Purus instead.]

-- Other Characters --
There are no basics for a character here, but if you wish to create a different character than the ones listed [all characters above except for those saying that they could possibly be NPC's, must be filled unless it is an exceptional character sheet before I shall except one of these] then either PM me or comment in the OOC with your idea, and I will most likely approve, depending. Some possible character ideas could include; Cherren Cousin, Eldest Everly Sister's Best Friend etc.

Global first: Brit visits all 201 states without flying

A British adventurer has become the first person to travel to all 201 sovereign states in the world without flying, ending his four-year odyssey early Monday when he arrived in South Sudan, the world?s newest nation.

Graham Hughes has used buses, boats, taxis, trains, and his own two feet ? but never an airplane ? to travel 160,000 miles in exactly 1,426 days, spending an average of less than $100 a week.

?I love travel, and I guess my reason for doing it was I wanted to see if this could be done, by one person traveling on a shoestring,? Mr. Hughes tells the Monitor Monday by telephone from Juba, South Sudan?s capital. ?I think I also wanted to show that the world is not some big, scary place, but in fact is full of people who want to help you even if you are a stranger.?

Are you smarter than a diplomat? Take our Foreign Service Exam.

Hughes, 33, set out from his home in Liverpool in northern England on New Year?s Day 2009.

Since then, he has visited all 193 United Nations member states plus Taiwan, Vatican City, Palestine, Kosovo, Western Sahara, and the four home nations of the United Kingdom.

GUINNESS CONFIRMED

Guinness World Records have confirmed that Hughes, who has been filming the trip for a documentary and raising money for a charity called Water Aid, is the first person to achieve this feat without flying.

?The main feeling today is just one of intense gratitude to every person around the world who helped me get here, by giving me a lift, letting me stay on their couch, or pointing me in the right direction,? Hughes said Monday. ?There were times, sitting in a bus station in Cambodia at one in the morning, riding some awful truck over bad roads, when I thought, why am I doing this? But there was always a reason to keep going.?

Highlights were swimming in a lake of jellyfish in the Pacific archipelago of Palau, watching one of NASA?s last Space Shuttle launches, and dancing with the jungle tribes of Papua New Guinea.

?People asked me how I was going to get to Afghanistan or Iraq or North Korea, but they were the easy ones, you don?t even need a visa for Iraq, you just walk across the border from Turkey,? he says.

?The really tough ones were places like Nauru, and the Maldives and the Seychelles, island countries where there were also sometimes pirate threats.?

Are you smarter than a diplomat? Take our Foreign Service Exam.

To cross oceans, Hughes hitched lifts with cargo ships. He spent four days in an open fishing canoe from Senegal to Cape Verde, and was then arrested when he arrived.

Later, officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo jailed him for six days believing he was a spy.

?None of this put me off, it just made me more bloody-minded to succeed,? he says.

DEATH IN THE FAMILY

The hardest point, ?when I just wanted to give up,? he remembers, was after his older sister, Nicola, died from cancer two years ago at the age of 39. Hughes rushed home to see her before she died.

?She told me not to stop the trip, but I was at a real low point. I?d done 184 countries and had only 17 to go and I thought why not leave it there,? he says. The memory of his sister spurred him on, as did the people that he met as he traveled and the money he was raising for Water Aid, which works to bring clean water to people in the developing world.

?If you take everything that you know of the world from the news, it?s all the bad stuff and you get very paranoid that everyone is out to get you,? he says. ?But the most amazing thing to me is that everyone I met looked after me and I didn?t even know them.?

Hughes plans to stay in South Sudan only until Wednesday. But he will not then be flying home.

Politics 101: Entitlements - Care2 News Network

So I really did see this billboard over the summer, on I-5 in southern Washington. Anyone who travels between Portland and Seattle with any frequency is aware of the cultural institution known as the "Uncle Sam billboard." It always has some extreme right-wing slogan next to a likeness of Uncle Sam. Apparently a farmer started it decades ago, and now the fabled sign is maintained by his son. (I neglected to include Uncle Sam when I drew the cartoon; I was so gobsmacked by the sentiment that I forgot all about him. And the internet tells me belatedly that the exact wording was "Should people receiving entitlements be allowed to vote?", but I'm too tired to fix it now.)

Clearly the sign is the handiwork of an ignoramus, but it touches on something that's been bothering me for a while. Many Americans don't understand the term "entitlements." Anyone hoping to preserve the social safety net should avoid the word, which makes Social Security and Medicare sound like frivolous handouts to undeserving snots. The fact that anti-poverty measures like food stamps are also referred to as entitlement programs only adds to the confusion, not that denying voting rights to poor people is any less reprehensible.

I wouldn't dismiss this billboard guy as a lone crackpot, either. TPM recently reported on conservative columnist Matthew Vadum, who suggested that registering poor people to vote is like handing out burglary tools to criminals. I smell a meme.
